Willow Smith says she’s proud of mom Jada for opening up about relationship

Celebrities may live their lives in the public eye, but that doesn’t mean they always want to comment on their private relationships—especially when rumours are involved. Jada Pinkett Smith took the opposite road recently though when facing her own potential scandal, and now her daughter Willow wants her to know she’s proud of her for it.On a new episode of Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk, Willow joined her mother and grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Jones. There she opened up about Jada and Will addressing the allegations that Jada had a relationship with singer August Alsina (with Smith’s supposed blessing) while the pair were still married. “I want to put it on the table. "Like, when you can be like, 'I'm with you. I'm going to stand by you and I'm going to hold your hand'... that's really important," she added.This past summer 28-year-old Alsina claimed he had a relationship entanglement with Pinkett Smith, and wanted to clarify that he wasn’t ruining a marriage because Smith knew about him. Jada and Will further clarified in a different, record-breaking episode of Red Table Talk that Jada did date Alsina about four and a half years ago. However Will and Jada had been separated at the time, and believed they were headed for a divorce. They later reconciled.“Four and a half years ago… I started a friendship with August and we actually became really, really good friends,” Pinkett Smith said. “And it all started with him just needing some help, me wanting to help his health, his mental state… You and I were going through a very difficult time,” she said to Will. Or, in the words of Ross and Rachel, they were on a break."I was done with your ass, but marriages have that, though," Will added. "We decided that we were going to separate for a period of time and you go figure out a way to make yourself happy and I'll figure out how to make myself happy."Smith and Pinkett Smith started dating in 1995 after meeting when Jada auditioned for a role on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (she didn’t get the part). They married in December 1997, had Jaden Smith a year later, and welcomed Willow in 2000. Although they’ve been married for more than two decades, this isn’t the first time people have questioned whether they’re in an open marriage.In 2013 Pinkett Smith defended her marriage in a Facebook post after comments she made in an interview about Will being his own person were taken out of context and went viral. “Should we be married to individuals who can not be responsible for themselves and their families within their freedom? Should we be in relationships with individuals who we can not entrust to their own values, integrity, and LOVE...for us???” she wrote at the time. “Here is how I will change my statement...Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so.
