There’s a severe shortage of joy in 2020, and two people who are doing their part to end the drought are actor Gabrielle Union and Cheer star Jerry Harris. On Thursday, Harris was taking part in Variety's Power of Young Hollywood event when he was surprised by the Bring It On star. There were definitely some Clovers in the atmosphere.Harris rose to fame this year after he was heavily featured in Netflix’s docu series, Cheer. Premiering in January, the series followed members of the Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team from Corsicana, Texas. Along with their coach Monica Aldama, members of the cheer squad were followed by cameras during their 2018–2019 season, which saw the top squad win their fifth NCA Grand National Championship. Harris and his infectious energy and legendary "mat talk" made him a breakout star on the docuseries, scoring the college cheerleader a spot on the Oscars red carpet working for Ellen DeGeneres and several endorsement deals, including Panera Bread and American Eagle.Harris spoke about his love for Union and all things Bring It On during the virtual event, calling the actor the “perfect blend of intelligence, class and strength.” Union, who somehow looks the exact same as she did when the film premiered 20 years ago, was just as excited as Harris during their surprise meeting, describing herself as a major Cheer fan. “You are the most wonderful person I’ve seen through my television in so long,” said Union, committing to a future work project with Harris. “You spoke to me, your positivity, your journey. I cried every time you appeared. I’m obsessed.”[video_embed id='2007459']RELATED: Gabrielle Union calls out Terry Crews for lack of ‘AGT’ support[/video_embed]Harris used his meeting with the Clover cheer captain and NAACP Image Award winner to get some advice on navigating Hollywood. “Time in this town — people act like it’s a suggestion, and that is the quickest way to put yourself right out the mix,” said Union. “So many people’s careers have been impacted, because they do not value other people’s time. Just be you. Don’t be weird and watch your crowd.”
Union previously tweeted about her love of Cheer following its premiere at the start of the year, calling it her “latest cheerleading obsession.” A few days later, Harris responded with a video jokingly calling out the actor and inviting her to the mat in 2020. That is a love-filled cheer-off we want to see.
As for Harris and Union working together in the future, Union has no shortage of ventures she could invite the college student to participate in. In addition to her TV and film roles, Union’s most recent project includes re-launching her affordable hair-care brand Flawless by Gabrielle Union, which now includes new formulations and a majority Black ownership.
