We may never get another season of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s award-winning Fleabag, but thankfully audiences will once again see Hot Priest on screen with Fleabag. Maybe we should be optimistic. Andrew Scott a.k.a. Hot Priest, participated in the Comic Con @Home Panel on July 23 that included the release of the first trailer for season two of His Dark Materials. While speaking about the upcoming season, Scott revealed that Waller-Bridge will be part of the new episodes. Amen.Scott will play Colonel John Parry in the second season, a character that only appeared as a photographer in last year’s premiere season. Scott’s newly expanded role will also include the introduction of Parry’s dæmon Sayan Kötör. “So much of the stuff that’s so beautiful to me about the books and the series is the relationship with the dæmon and I do have a relationship with my dæmon,” said Scott during Thursday’s panel. “I think this is the first time we’re revealing this but my dæmon is going to be played by somebody who is very close to me in my real life, a young performer and writer called Phoebe Waller-Bridge.”[caption id="attachment_4944326" align="alignleft" width="700"] Giphy[/caption]“I’m really thrilled about that because it’s all about companionship and friendship and loyalty, and that’s what I feel about Phoebe in my real life, so it’s wonderful that it’s happening. ” added Scott, who continues to be as swoon-worthy IRL as his Fleabag character. As for what Waller-Bridge’s dæmon will look like, expect the SAG, BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe winner to be soaring through trees. In the best-selling Philip Pullman books, Parry’s dæmon is an osprey, not a fox or a guinea pig. So close.[video_embed id='2001871']WATCH: Andrew Scott reveals a 'Fleabag' reunion in 'His Dark Materials'[/video_embed]The first season of His Dark Materials starred Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ruth Wilson, Ariyon Bakare, Amir Wilson, James McAvoy and Dafne Keen and centered on Pullman’s Northern Lights/Golden Compass book. Season two, which is scheduled to premiere this fall, was mostly completed before coronavirus shut down production on sets around the world. HBO shot the first and second seasons back-to-back in order to ensure continuity for 15-year-old Keen, who plays 12-year-old lead character Lyra. The second season picks up two days after the finale of season one and will tell the story of Pullman’s book The Subtle Knife, a powerful weapon that Scott Parry is shown holding in the new trailer.
Showing off his new quarantine hair during the panel (the congregation approves), Scott said that most of his work on-set was with Hamilton creator Miranda. “A lot of my stuff is with Lin and we had such a good time, it was such a joy to do that.”One character not returning for season two is James McAvoy’s Lord Asriel, who doesn't appear in the second book. During yesterday’s panel, executive producer Jane Tranter said that there were initially plans for a capsule episode with McAvoy that were abandoned because of the pandemic shutdown. Tranter said that filming on the adaptation of The Subtle Knife had wrapped in December 2019 and McAvoy’s episode was scheduled for the following March.“It was a standalone episode that Jack [Thorne] had written with the blessing and input from Philip Pullman. It looked at what Asriel had been doing between going through the anomaly at the end of season one and when we see Lord Asriel at the beginning of book three,” said Tranter, who noted that everyone involved in the show felt lucky to have filmed all seven episodes of the new season before the shutdown occurred.A breakout hit of 2019, season one of His Dark Materials is available to stream on Crave.[video_embed id='1999752']BEFORE YOU GO: This artist gives Disney princesses a realistic makeover[/video_embed]
