It takes a special day to reunite a special show, but for the ladies of
Parks and Recreation is there really any better day than Galentine’s Day, aka the day where ladies celebrate their best gal pals, for a mini reunion? That would be a big old Leslie
Knope.Fans were more than a little in love with the fact that, on the day before Valentine’s Day, Aubrey Plaza shared a Galentine’s Day throwback photo with her
Parks co-stars Amy Poehler, Kathryn Hahn and Rashida Jones. It’s a reminder that while the February 13 holiday is still unofficial, it very much lives on long after the show that introduced it.
For those who haven’t gotten into the lady love spirit, Galentine’s Day is a holiday that was first introduced in the beloved sitcom’s second season. “Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast style,” Poehler’s Leslie Knope character explained in the episode. “Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”
The idea of a holiday celebrating female friendships is about a decade old now, but it seems like it’s just kicking off on a more universal level. Companies are cashing in on it, venues are holding official events, and Galentine’s Day cards
are a real thing. Some call it a
political statement, others call it an
important movement, and in general, it seems like sometimes—just sometimes—we actually get the nice things we deserve.“I love that the show celebrated female friendship in such a pure way,” Poehler
told LAist in an oral history of the made-up festivity. “Holidays are usually awful. Centering one around love and relationships can be a recipe for disaster. By subverting the expectation of Valentine's Day, Galentine's Day reminds you that the women in your life are often your truest and longest loves.”And really, isn’t the fact that Plaza is still celebrating with her best gals 10 years later kind of a testament to that? At the very least it’s a reason to grab your best gal pal and head out for some waffles.
It’s what Leslie would do, after all.[video_embed id='1897296']Natalie Portman shines a light on female directors with her Oscars fashion[/video_embed]
