It’s official: the Kardashian Christmas party is cancelled. Khloe has confirmed the news, revealing that the swanky, star-studded affair has been shut down for the first time in more than four decades as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Covid cases are getting out of control in CA. So we decided that we’re not doing a Christmas Eve party this year,” the 36-year-old wrote on Twitter in response to a fan question. “It’s the first time we will not be having a Christmas Eve party since 1978 I believe. Health and safety first though! Taking this pandemic seriously is a must.”

That’s not the only tradition the Kardashians are foregoing this year, either; the fam has put a pin in their annual holiday card, which fans eagerly anticipate each year (they do put many other family photo shoots to shame, after all). “We have not done anything. No Christmas photos and no Christmas Eve party this year. Covid has taken over," Khloe tweeted in response to another fan.

Khloe’s stance is a bit of a pivot from what she told followers last month. In November she also discussed the annual Christmas Eve party—which the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Drake have attended in the past—but took a more hopeful approach. “I think it will have to be way smaller obviously,” she tweeted. “And I'm totally fine with that! But we're definitely celebrating Christmas! It will just have to be small and safe. Maybe do rapid testing before. We have to think of what is safest.”

Since then, Southern California, where the family lives, has been put under a three-week, ‘Safer at Home’ order that prohibits gatherings of more than one household. That obviously makes the traditional shindig—even a smaller version of it—illegal.

That means fans will just have to wait and see how the daughters, who took over hosting duties from Kris a couple of years ago, will top last year’s party. The 2019 gala at Kourtney’s house was an event, with a live Elf on the Shelf, an upside down Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling, a performance by Sia, and traditional carolers serenading arriving guests. The year before that, Kim hosted at her Hidden Hills mansion, and according to People her snow-capped mountain tent, Whoville tree installations, light tunnel, and overall festivities probably cost about $1.3 million to pull off.

Cancelling plans is a big deal for the family, but it’s also a smart move with fans. The family, and specifically Kim, came under fire for her recent birthday celebrations. The personality flew her friends and family to a private island to celebrate her 40th birthday in October, drawing plenty of criticism from followers and haters alike. Mind you, the family has also had their own experiences with coronavirus. Both Khloe and Kayne West tested positive for COVID-19, which was revealed earlier this year on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

“Let me tell you, that shit is real,” Khloe said at the time. “I suffer from migraines, but this was the craziest headache. I wouldn’t say it was a migraine. The coughing, my chest would burn when I would cough. I mean my throat is still not fully recovered, clearly,” she added. “But, we’re all gonna get through this… if we follow orders and listen we’re all going to be okay. May God bless us all."
