Taylor Swift is done being silenced. Admittedly, much of it was her own doing, but now at 30-years-old, Swift is ready to use her voice for more than just singing. That’s the biggest take away from the first trailer for Swift’s highly anticipated new documentary Miss Americana, which is set to debut in select theatres and on Netflix on January 31.The trailer arrives just hours before the first screening of the film takes place this week at the Sundance Film Festival. Earning the coveted opening night slot on January 23 at the prestigious festival, Swift shared the trailer on Instagram, writing “It’s been a long time coming.”

The new trailer features footage of Swift on stage and at home with her family, with voiceovers from the media interspliced on top of shots of Swift on the red carpet and with ex-boyfriends. Swift reveals in the trailer that she felt the need to disappear at the height of her popularity in order to distance herself from the negative coverage surrounding her personal life (see: every line in “Shake It Off”). “Nobody physically saw me for a year and that’s what I thought they wanted,” says Swift.[video_embed id='1702482']RELATED: Joe Jonas said it was ‘nice’ to get an apology from ex Taylor Swift[/video_embed]The singer also talks about the shift that occurred when she made the conscious decision to voice her political beliefs, namely on topics about feminism and LGBTQ rights. “Throughout my career, label executives say a nice girl doesn’t force their opinions on people,” says Swift in the doc. “I had to deconstruct an entire belief system, toss it out and reject it,” adding “It woke me up from feeling like I was constantly fighting for people’s respect. It was happiness without anyone else’s input. It feels f**king awesome.”Swift’s boyfriend Joe Alwyn can be seen briefly in the trailer hugging the singer. Swift’s parents both make appearances as well, as does musician Brandon Urie. Swift fans who have followed the singer’s career will likely be on the lookout for the singer’s mother Andrea, who has been by her daughter’s side throughout her career as her companion and her ‘guiding force.’ In an interview this week with Variety, Swift revealed that while Andrea was receiving treatment for cancer in 2019, doctors also found brain tumors. “Almost every decision I make, I talk to her about it first,” Swift told Variety, confirming that Andrea’s illness will be mentioned in the documentary. “So obviously it was a really big deal to ever speak about her illness.”The future of Emmy-winning director Lana Wilson’s doc with Taylor Swift seemed uncertain only a few months ago when manager Scooter Braun bought Big Machine Records and gained ownership over Swift’s first six albums. After much private and public back and forth between Swift and Braun, the release of the doc was greenlit.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Stubborn husky tries to prevent owner from going to work[/video_embed]
