The Cambridges host Bingo night for lucky seniors

Last night at the Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff, Wales, there was Bingo, a virtual visit from a royal couple, and a teensy bit of shade. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dialed in for the home’s big Bingo night, sharing the role of the game’s co-callers and cheering on the competing seniors vying for the first "BINGO" (and the bragging rights that must certainly come with being crowned a winner in front of William and Kate).A video of the socially distanced event was shared on the Royal Family’s official YouTube channel and shows the Royal couple chatting it up with the care home’s staff ahead of the big game. William inquired about the staff’s mental health and, from behind full PPE, they told the Duke that “the morale in the home is lovely. It is a positive daily life at Shire Hall.” It’s a relief to hear, considering how hard-hit senior assisted living facilities have been by COVID-19. “I’ve never known Welsh people not to know how to have fun,” William responded before things got serious with the first spin of the Bingo cage. When they spoke to the game's first winner, Joan, she threw the slightest bit of shade, telling the BINGO-calling newbies, "Very good," before adding in jest, "It wasn't as good as it should have been." The Cambridges didn't seem to get too torn up about the criticism though. Clearly, there's a learning curve to this Bingo thing.Shade aside, the sweet gesture likely meant so much to seniors who participated and who, because of the vulnerabilities of age, will likely be isolating longer than the rest of us.
