In the days following the passing of George Floyd, social networks have — rightfully so — been awash with outcries and calls for action from affected communities, activists, influencers, celebrities, and politicians alike. And now, Taylor Swift is the latest prominent voice to join the conversation. Although Swift normally steers clear of political discourse on social media, she’s using her platform to take a stand against the POTUS himself. Late Thursday night, Trump reacted to the protests unfolding in Minneapolis, tweeting “These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won't let that happen," he continued. "Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!" The tweets, which have since been flagged for violating the platform’s rules about glorifying violence, inspired heated backlash from both users and celebrities, Swift included. Earlier today, she tweeted directly at Trump to not only condemn his actions, but warn that “we will vote you out in November”. In her 2020 documentary, Miss Americana, Swift addressed those criticisms directly, noting that her hesitation to speak up or endorse a 2016 presidential candidate was to maintain a “good girl” persona, as her team urged her to not compromise her likability with political controversy or backlash. Since the 2018 midterm elections, Swift seems more willing than ever before to speak up and utilize her platform for political discussion. The singer recently acted as an advocate for the Equality Act, and criticized Republican Tennessee senator Marsha Blackburn for her anti-LGBTQ voting record. Swift isn’t alone, however. Countless celebrities, including Jamie Foxx, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, LeBron James, Kim Kardashian West and more have taken to social media to express their outrage over George Floyd’s death. In response to Swift’s tweet, stars like Uzo Aduba, Alyssa Milano and Queer Eye's Bobby Berk chimed in. [video_embed id='1968130']RELATED: Biden speaks out on George Floyd killing.[/video_embed]
