Season four of
This Is Us ended with a drama packed hour that revealed two shocking baby announcements, introduced several new characters in flashforwards, and capped off with one of the most raw and painful fights in the show’s history (
read our full recap here). Oh, TIU, you torture us so but we just can’t quit you. In a new interview about what fans can expect in season five, Emmy-winning actor Sterling K. Brown teases a back story for Rebecca and Miguel and more baby news. Plus, we can thankfully stop our prayer circle for Randall for the moment. Our hearts can only take so much at once.Speaking to
EW from his home where he is isolating with his family, Brown said that viewers will finally get to see how Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Miguel (Jon Huertas) went from friends, to strangers, to a married couple in the span of several years. He also said that the baby bomb dropped by Madison (Caitlin Thompson) on Kevin (Justin Hartley) will be a big focal point next season.[video_embed id='5462961187001']RELATED: Mandy Moore Calls 'This is Us' the 'Greatest Job' She's Ever Had[/video_embed]“It's really going to be interesting to experience the
Knocked Up storyline of Madison and Kevin and how exactly that whole thing looks, because Madison is just such a wonderful character and Caitlin does such a great job,” said Brown. The actor added that writer and show creator Dan Fogelman, who is married to Thompson, spent more time than usual on set in season four to watch his wife at work. “It's so cute to see him [Fogelman] on set, watching his wife talk about having another man's child and he's like, ‘I think she's doing good.’ I said, ‘Bro, she's doing really good! You should be proud!’”The second major baby announcement in the season four finale centered around Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) decision to adopt. “The exploration of the adoption that Toby and Kate are going to go through is going to be very interesting,” said Brown, noting that he was especially impressed last season with Sullivan’s work as Toby and his storyline of being unable to connect to his young son, Jack. “Kudos to Sully [for] just showing the difficulties of connecting with his child. It's not something that people talk about all the time, but I've talked to multiple friends that said, ‘It's not an automatic thing all the time to feel this immense outpouring of unadulterated and unconditional love. There's worry and all these other things that are mixed into it.’ And I really think it's cool to be able to see that on-screen.”Of course, when talking to Brown, we want to get the Randall tease. “There's something there for Randall that I'm really excited about,” Brown told EW. “It has to do with this exploration of past. In a similar way in which we went to Memphis [near the end of season 1] to find out things about where he came from, his father's family, etc., it's going to be something very much akin to that. But with its own little unique spin on it. I don't want to say too much, but it should be cool.”Brown also touched on the fast-forward scene in season four which shows the big three celebrating their birthdays separately. In
Episode 9, Rebecca and Miguel are at the Pearson family cabin along with Kevin and Kate to celebrate the triplets 40
th birthday. When Rebecca asks about Randall’s whereabouts, Kevin reminds his mother that they are no longer speaking to his brother. Following the season four finale, it appears as though Randall’s successful efforts to guilt trip Rebecca into a trial for her dementia diagnosis is what led to his estrangement from his siblings. But then again, this is
This Is Us. There could be a whole other drama that led to Randall separating from his family.“While the tactics that he employs sometimes may not always be the right ones, his intentions are always in the right place. So, he’ll be aight,” said Brown. Finally! Things are stressful right now and we would just like to know at least one of our favourite characters is going to be fine.[video_embed id='1957807']BEFORE YOU GO: This video shows how easily germs spread at a buffet[/video_embed]
