Like, um, everything, the ceremonies and celebrations for graduates of the class of 2020 are cancelled this year, putting a serious damper on what should be a momentous occasion in a teenager’s life. BUT! With everything from meetings to cooking classes to puppy training sessions migrating online, Facebook has come through with a solution to shake off grads’ varsity blues. The social networking platform announced plans to host a virtual graduation for this year’s crop of seniors — and they’ve wrangled some seriously big celebrities to get in on the matriculation action. With high schools still shut down and showing little signs of reopening until September at the earliest, seniors are being forced to set aside the idea of an IRL prom, of having their families watch them receive their diplomas, and of signing each other’s yearbooks on the last day of class (yearbooks still exist, right?). Instead, they’ll mark the moment online — with some special guests who, in all likelihood, would not have been present at their previously planned celebrations.[video_embed id='1941509']RELATED: John Krasinski is trying to make prom during the pandemic a little more special[/video_embed]In a live streaming event slated for May 15 titled '#Graduation2020: Facebook and Instagram Celebrate the Class of 2020,' the social media giant will
bring celebs such as Oprah Winfrey, Miley Cyrus, Awkwafina, Lil Nas X, Jennifer Garner, Simone Biles and other big stars to screens across the continent so that they can entertain and cheer on this year’s crop of graduates. Winfrey will provide the commencement speech and Miley will belt out her 2009 hit ‘The Climb’ while other famous participants will offer advice and support to their teen audience. Fingers crossed that at least one of them will do it in their old prom dresses and tuxes.Leading up to the big day, a series of online events meant to replicate traditions like Senior Skip Day and Senior Superlatives (aka Most Likely Tos) will be popping up on Instagram, and Facebook will be rolling out tools that will make it easier for users to celebrate graduation with friends and family… and Oprah.[video_embed id='1941687']RELATED: Say hello to virtual prom and grad ceremonies[/video_embed]
