Shannen Doherty has been an open book with fans when it comes to her ongoing battle with cancer. The actor has shared both the highs and lows of the disease, including her rounds of chemo and subsequent hair loss, as well as celebrating her remission in 2017. Last month, Doherty confirmed that her cancer had returned and is continuing to share her struggles as well as her daily successes. The Beverly Hills 90210 star’s latest update has been about her commitment to focusing on small victories, whether it’s eating a healthy meal or simply appreciating being alive. “After a year of dealing with cancer coming back and other stresses, I’m back at it,” Doherty wrote on an Instagram post. “Taking care of myself and embracing every day. It’s not always easy. I have days I’m depressed or just plain lazy. But I push thru with the help of friends.”[video_embed id='1892474']RELATED: Shannen Doherty reveals her cancer is back[/video_embed]The actress shared a picture of herself with some of her helpful friends, including Anne Marie Kortright, whom Doherty credits with being “…relentless in getting me to hike and learning new ways to cook that feed my soul as well as my tummy but in a very healthy way,” adding that Kortright has helped Doherty understand how to making cooking both fun and sustainable. Doherty is also pictured with celebrity trainer Kira Stokes, whom she thanks for kicker her butt. “It’s been a productive great week,” she added, sharing pictures of healthy dishes like Brussel sprouts and sushi. “I feel better. My skin is alive and so am I.”
Doherty’s cancer returned in 2019, but she only shared the news in February. After her home was damaged in a fire in 2018, Doherty became embroiled in a legal battle with her insurance company State Farm. The ongoing dispute is set to go to trial in the coming weeks and Doherty’s medical files will be made public, a fact that Doherty said prompted her to go public with her cancer diagnosis in order to retain ownership over her own health struggles.Speaking to Good Morning America on February 4, Doherty shared her cancer status and also spoke about her return to the set of Beverly Hills 90210. Doherty said she reprised her role  as a way to honour her late friend and co-star Luke Perry and to show viewers that a cancer diagnosis doesn’t mean a person has to stop living."I thought, people can look at that and say, 'Oh my God, yeah. She can work, and other people with stage 4 can work, too.' Our life doesn't end the minute we get that diagnosis," said Doherty, telling GMA that the only cast member who knew about her cancer was Brian Austin Green. "Prior to shooting, he would always call me and say, 'Listen: Whatever happens, I have your back.'"The actress, who appeared in a Riverdale tribute episode for Perry in 2019, said that she hopes to do more to honour her late friend who died suddenly from a stroke. “To be diagnosed and then someone who is seemingly healthy to go first, it was really shocking,” said Doherty. “The least I could do to honour him was do that show. I still haven’t done enough, in my opinion. It’s a hard one.”[video_embed id='6135765476001']BEFORE YOU GO: Isaac Wright Jr.’s remarkable story inspired ‘For Life’[/video_embed]
