Sean Penn is officially a married man for the third time. The 59-year-old former husband of both Madonna and Robin Wright (at different times, of course) got hitched again this past Thursday to his partner of four years, fellow actor Leila George. George, the 28-year-old daughter of Vincent D’Onofrio and Greta Scacchi, featured in the most recent season of the crime drama Animal Kingdom, and wed Penn in a pandemic-style ceremony done remotely from the star’s home.“We did a COVID wedding,” Penn told late night host Seth Meyers after showing off the simple gold band that he was wearing on his ring finger. “By that I mean it was a county commissioner on Zoom, we were at the house—my two children and her brother—and we did it that way.” News of the marriage first leaked last Friday when philanthropist and entrepreneur Irena Medavoy unwittingly let the cat out of the bag by extending her congratulations to Penn and George over social media.Meyers congratulated the actor and remarked that the event sounded both low-key and low-stress (Instagram leaks aside). “Let’s say there are some socially liberating factors under COVID,” quipped Penn, who casually puffed away on a cigarette during the entire interview (another thing you couldn’t do in the pre-pandemic world). The conversation then turned to the topic of Penn’s non-profit organization, CORE. Originally created to distribute aid in Haiti after an earthquake devastated the country in 1980, the project has recently pivoted to providing COVID testing on the ground in the U.S.—most significantly, perhaps, at Black Lives Matter protests—as evidenced in a social media post by the new Mrs. Penn with a placard offering free testing, a service that the current American administration has stopped funding in several places.
The actor and activist blames America’s poor track record with the virus on misinformation and a lack of federal leadership. While President Trump complains that the country is doing too much testing, Penn’s organization has been working with local and state governments to get COVID tests to Americans across the country with contact tracing included in a process that takes a total of five days. We’re guessing that the honeymoon might not be a priority right now.
