Borat has been in the cultural zeitgeist since 2006 when his first mockumentary film was released to much fanfare, so it's hard to believe that 14 years later, people are still granting interviews to Sacha Baron Cohen. Even more shocking is that the famed former Mayor of New York and Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani has been swept up in a Borat scandal. In
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, the sequel to the original juggernaut, Giuliani is caught in a compromising position with young Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova, who plays Borat’s 15-year-old daughter Tutar. Hidden cameras from all angles were rolling as Giuliani appears to put a hand down his pants in a hotel bedroom with Bakalova.Amid the ensuing
chaos, Baron Cohen and Bakalova appeared out of character on
Good Morning America Friday morning to address the scene that's causing such a stir.
“If the president’s lawyer found what he did there appropriate behavior, then heaven knows what he’s done with other female journalists in hotel rooms," Cohen said, not holding back.“And listen, I just urge everyone to watch the movie,” he continued. “It is what it is. He did what he did. Make your own mind up. It was pretty clear to us.” You can watch the clip in question
here. We warn you, it’s def NSFW.Bakalova then thanked Cohen for rescuing her in that scene. “I wanna thank you. I was sure that you're gonna save me from everything.”Cohen then added that he had a duty on this film to ensure everyone’s safety, and admitted, “I was quite concerned for her during the scene. We built a hideaway that I was hiding in during the entire scene so I was monitoring it by text but you know, it's my responsibility as a producer as well to ensure that the lead actor is looked after.”[video_embed id='2060736']RELATED: Rudy Giuliani and his controversial ‘Borat 2’ scene[/video_embed]This is the first time Cohen has addressed the incident as himself, but yesterday he posted a clip to Twitter of himself in full Borat regalia, and used a flurry of double entendre to get the same message across.“I here to defend America's mayor, Rudolph Giuliani,” he said in his thick Borat accent. “What was an innocent sexy time encounter between a consenting man and my 15-year-old daughter have been turned into something disgusting by fake news media.”
He continued, "I warn you anyone else try this and Rudolph will not hesitate to reach into his legal briefs and whip out his subpoenas.”Wow. Just . . . wow.Giuliani took to Twitter himself earlier this week to call the clip a fabrication and distortion of the truth.
Saying he was in fact merely tucking his shirt in after removing a wire microphone, he tweeted, “At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate. If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar.”
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, so like Cohen said, watch it and decide for yourself.[video_embed id='2061677']Before you go: Does ‘Borat Subsequent MovieFilm’ live up to the original?[/video_embed]
