Like most weddings planned for 2020, Princess Beatrice’s nuptials to fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi were
put on hold due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Unlike most weddings, the bride wore a dress and tiara borrowed from her grandmother, the Queen of England. Royals, they’re just like us! Kinda. On Friday, Princess Beatrice and Edoardo
finally made their way down the aisle after being forced to cancel their May wedding. The couple celebrated their nuptials on a much smaller scale, adhering to the U.K. government’s new rules that gatherings of up to 30 people are permitted. Saying ‘I do’ at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge, Beatrice, who is ninth in line to the British throne, looked every bit the princess in her vintage dress and jewels, putting together an ensemble that had included a few things borrowed from her grandmother.
Beatrice walked down the aisle in a Norman Hartnell gown, which was lent to her by Queen Elizabeth. The vintage ivory gown was made using Peau De Soie taffeta and trimmed in ivory satin. First
worn by Queen Elizabeth in 1962 at the film premiere of
Lawrence of Arabia and again in 1967 at the State Opening of Parliament, Beatrice made a few notable changes, including dropping the petticoat and switching the gown to an A-line design to give it more natural movement. Not only did Beatrice’s gown honour her grandmother, it also shared several details with her mother Sarah Ferguson’s wedding dress. Beatrice added puffed sleeves to her grandmother’s dress and choose a gown with an ornate diamanté-covered bodice, similar to the one her mother wore during her 1986 wedding to Prince Andrew. Beatrice worked with designers
Angela Kelly and Stewart Parvin to turn the red carpet dress into a more customized wedding gown.[video_embed id='1998338']RELATED: New details released about Princess Beatrice's wedding[/video_embed]As for her stunning tiara and veil combination, Beatrice paid homage to both the important women in her life. Her tiara was first worn by her grandmother in 1947 during her wedding to Beatrice’s grandfather, Prince Philip. Beatrice also wore a full veil similar to the one worn by the Duchess of York.
Beatrice followed the royal custom of having her flowers placed on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Westminster Abbey, but the princess diverted from tradition by opting for a platinum and diamond wedding band designed by British jeweler Shaun Leane.
Hello! Magazine describes the band as a fusion between Victorian and Art Deco aesthetics. Traditionally, royal wedding bands have been gold. Queen Elizabeth began the tradition by wearing a band made from a nugget of pure Welsh gold. The gold from this Clogau mine was used to make wedding bands for Princess Margaret, Princess Anne, and for both Princess Diana and Prince Charles. More recently, the gold was used for the wedding bands of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Beatrice’s sister and brother-in-law, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank. The small wedding did not include any hymns being sung as per government guidelines, but music, including the National Anthem, was reportedly played. Ferguson
reportedly read “Sonnett 116” by William Shakespeare and the E.E. Cummings poem “I carry you in my heart,” which Edoardo included on his Instagram page.
Although Beatrice and Edoardo said ‘I do’ on Friday, according to royal reporter
Omid Scobie, the couple waited until Saturday to share their wedding photos so as not to overshadow the investiture ceremony on July 17 of
Captain Sir Thomas Moore at Windsor Castle.Friday’s wedding was a significantly smaller affair than what Beatrice, 31, and Edoardo, 37 had initially planned. The couple were supposed to be married in London at the Chapel Royal in the grounds of St James's Palace, which is large enough to fit 150 guests. Their reception was scheduled to take place on the ground of Buckingham Palace. Still, the couple were able to celebrate with family and friends and reportedly had a relaxed reception that included a bouncy castle, sofas, draft beer, a jukebox, and glamping pods where guests could spend the night while physically distancing. According to
The Mirror, Edoardo’s three-year-old son Christopher acted as his best man and page boy.The delayed ceremony was the latest hurdle Beatrice has been forced to endure since getting
engaged to Edoardo, a longtime family friend, back in 2019. Following the
fallout of her father Prince Andrew after his ties to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein were revealed, Beatrice was almost
forced to cancel her engagement party. The
event went on, but without the attendance of her father. According to
The Daily Beast, Beatrice has been isolating with her father so that he could walk her down the aisle on Friday.[video_embed id='1993091']BEFORE YOU GO: Why it's important to wear a face mask properly [/video_embed]
