Get ready for a royal wave of streaming content coming straight from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Harry and Meghan, everyone’s favourite royals in self-imposed North American exile, have officially inked what is likely a very lucrative deal to produce a wide variety of programming for Netflix. Guess they didn’t need that House of Windsor money after all.The official announcement, coming from the service’s chief content officer and co-CEO Ted Sarandos, says that the couple “have inspired millions of people all around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership. We’re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home – and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere.”[video_embed id='-1']Meghan Markle shares her secret to being happy[/video_embed]The deal comes just after news broke that Harry and Meghan had made California their new home, buying a multi-million-dollar mansion in the chic and exclusive Montecito neighbourhood. With the Sussexes officially putting down roots just an hour-and-a-half outside of LA, it only makes sense that they’d launch their entertainment industry careers (or, in Meghan’s case, re-launch).“Our lives, both independent of each other, and as a couple have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection,” read a statement issued by the pair. “Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope.”As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens,” they continued. “We are pleased to work with Ted and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”It would seem that the goal of the Duke and Duchess is nothing short of changing the media and entertainment landscape with issues-oriented programming aimed at broadening the ideas, people, and views presented on our screens. The previous film projects that both Harry and Meghan have involved themselves in were similarly activistic, with the Duchess providing narration for a Disney documentary about the plight of endangered elephants and the Duke lending a hand in the production of film about the Paralympic Games.[video_embed id='2026855']BEFORE YOU GO: Kanye West opens up about crashing Taylor Swift’s VMAs speech[/video_embed]
