Johnny Depp’s defamation court case against ex-wife Amber Heard is scheduled to begin later this month and the Pirates of the Caribbean star is getting some help from his famous friends. Just last week, Depp’s ex-fiancé Winona Ryder submitted a letter detailing her relationship with Depp and calling him ‘"kind and "loving.’" Now Depp’s co-star Penelope Cruz is also sharing her experiences with the actor. In a new legal document obtained by The Blast, Cruz’s written declaration speaks to her relationship with Depp, whom she met when she was 19. “He was in Madrid and Pedro Almodovar introduced him to me. The only sentences I knew how to say in English at that time were, ‘how are you’ and ‘I want to work with Johnny Depp,’” writes Cruz.First working together in 2001 on Blow and reuniting again in 2011 for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and 2017’s Murder On The Orient Express, Cruz contends that whole "[m]any years have passed and I have not only made 3 movies with him, I also count on him as a great friend. I’ve always been impressed by his kindness, his brilliant mind, his talent, and his peculiar sense of humor," according to the documents.[video_embed id='1832967']RELATED: Johnny Depp is reportedly single[/video_embed]Cruz echoes Ryder’s statement that she never witnessed Depp react violently in any situation, adding "I’ve seen Johnny in so many situations and he is always kind to everyone around. He is one of the most generous people I know.”The actress, who shares a son with husband Javier Bardem, also remembered the care that Depp took of her while the pair were shooting On Stranger Tides. "During six months of my first pregnancy, I spent every single day with him while we shot Pirates of the Caribbean. My husband and I will never forget the sweetness, protection, and kindness he treated me with during every single step of that process." Cruz ended her note speaking on behalf of herself and Bardem, writing “We love him very much and I feel lucky to have someone so special in our lives."Depp and Heard divorced in 2016 after only one year of marriage. The pair’s split included a domestic violence restraining order filed by Heard against Depp, who alleged that her husband had been verbally and emotionally abusive during their time together. Leaked video of the couple fighting ended up online and the pair eventually settled outside of court. Depp agreed to pay Heard $7 million, which she donated to a children’s aid charity and an organization that helps victims of domestic abuse.Part of the settlement agreement was that neither party would speak publicly about their marriage. In 2018, Heard wrote a Washington Post article titled “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” Heard does not name Depp in the article but characterizes herself as a victim of domestic violence, which was enough for Depp to launch a lawsuit for $50 million against his ex-wife last year. The trial is expected to begin on March 23.[video_embed id='1920389']BEFORE YOU GO: Meghan Markle says emotional goodbye to U.K. before leaving for Canada[/video_embed]
