One of the best things about the MTV Video Music Awards is that it is often one of the more exciting and fun award nights, where celebs can wear meat dresses instead of ball gowns, and politeness gives way to epic Hollywood showdowns (remember Nicki vs Miley in 2015? Or Kanye vs Taylor in 2009?). But with 2020 being the year that literally everything in the entertainment industry shut down due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the future of the VMAs was looking grim there for a while. But fear not! For there is a new hope! The VMAs might actually take place at the Barclay’s Centre in Brooklyn in August. Except it may not look like what we’ve come to expect.

Variety is reporting that MTV is working in conjunction with health and government agencies to make the awards show happen, although several contingency plans might be enacted if physical distancing measures cannot be guaranteed during the show. A source told Variety that they’re exploring the idea of virtual performances, or even staging the show without an audience. Hmm, does this mean the resurrection of the much-scoffed hologram performances? Remember hologram Tupac and hologram Michael Jackson? Is that now... a thing?

An MTV spokesperson told Variety, “We’re exploring with government officials, the medical community and key stakeholders on how to safely hold the 2020 VMAs at Barclays Center on August 30th. The health of everyone involved is our number one priority. Additionally, we are working on several contingency plans to bring music’s biggest night to audiences everywhere.”

To let everyone in the entertainment industry know that they mean business, MTV even sent out save-the-date notices to top agents and talent reps this past week, which suggests that the show will take place in its traditional live and in-person format.
