Miley Cyrus is taking a conscious step away from drugs and alcohol. In a new interview with
Variety, the
Bangerz singer revealed that she’s been ‘sober sober’ for the past six months, a decision that began as a necessity following extensive vocal cord surgery and became a new lifestyle choice. In October 2019, Cyrus was hospitalized for tonsillitis. During her treatment, doctors discovered an undiagnosed issue with her
vocal cords that required an extensive surgery and a recovery that included four weeks of silence. “My doctor looked at my vocal cords, and he said, ‘No one shy ever has to get this surgery. This is from over- use of the vocal cords,’” said Cyrus. “It’s no surprise that I would have this. I’ve been touring since I was 12 years old, but it’s not even the touring that’s the hard part. It’s you end up staying up late and meet-and-greets and things like that. And obviously I just talk a shit ton.”Cyrus told
Variety that vocal rest and abstaining from smoking weed and drinking while recovering enabled her to focus on her music with a new clarity. “One of my favorite interviews is when I say, ‘Anyone that smokes weed is a dummy.’ That one I love to send to my parents, who are big stoners, every now and then. It’s been really important for me over the last year living a sober lifestyle, because I really wanted to polish up my craft,” said Cyrus, who added that vocal rest prepared her for the ‘stillness and quietness’ of sobriety. “The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time. I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready.”Cyrus’ sobriety is a surprising shift from an artist who has extolled the virtues of marijuana several times throughout her career, both in her music and interviews. It now appears as though Cyrus’ days of lighting up onstage at award shows may be done for good.
Now at the six-month mark of her sobriety, Cyrus revealed that she has been researching her family history and examining the factors that may have played a role in her years spent smoking weed and drinking. “At the beginning, it was just about this vocal surgery. … But I had been thinking a lot about my mother,” said Cyrus. “My mom was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings and wanting to prove that you’re wanted and valuable. My dad’s parents divorced when he was 3, so my dad raised himself. I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, ‘Why am I the way that I am?’ By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great.”Known for her high energy and often wild on-stage performances, Cyrus said she wanted to make one thing very clear about the stigma that only people who drink and use drugs are fun. “It’s like, ‘honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I’m fun.’”Cyrus may no longer be participating, but that doesn’t mean the artist is against others who choose to partake in the green. In April, Cyrus celebrated 4/20 with a gif and a shout out to her ‘stoner’ parents. See! Still fun.
