Every day, more celebrities are teaming up to use their resources any way they can to help fight the spread of COVID-19. The global pandemic has shut down the entertainment industry, so most celebs have nothing but time during quarantine to use their connections for good. Madonna is the latest A-lister to make a donation that will have a huge impact on thousands of people’s health and lives. It was announced quietly on Wednesday that her Ray of Light foundation teamed up with the Reform Alliance to donate a whopping 100,000 masks to jails and prisons. Billboard is reporting that REFORM co-chair Michael Rubin released a statement, in part reading, “More than 2 million lives in prisons across America are currently at stake due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  It's absolutely crucial that we protect our inmates and prison staff, especially since social distancing guidelines are difficult to abide by in these facilities. REFORM remains committed to protecting one of our nation's most vulnerable populations, many of whom are currently incarcerated for technical probation violations (not committing a crime), and we're grateful for the support of our partners in this endeavor.”[video_embed id='1918726']RELATED: Madonna cancels shows amid COVID-19 outbreak[/video_embed]TIME has reported that the novel coronavirus has impacted jails and prisons in the United States in an acute way that needs to be addressed, so it seems Madonna’s donation comes just in time. The ‘Material Girl’ had previously released a hotly-debated video describing how COVID-19 is “the great equalizer,” but at that time had made no mention of using her resources or her Ray of Light charity to make a change in the course of this pandemic. Facing some criticism after that video, a few days ago she auctioned off her memorabilia to raise funds for those economically impacted by the financial fallout from the pandemic.
Although currently no mention of the impressive mask donation appears on her social media feeds, she recently tweeted out a photoshopped picture of her from her ‘Holiday’ days, wearing a medical mask like the ones donated to the prisons. Perhaps that’s a subtle wink. [video_embed id='1893502']Before you go: Madonna called Canada boring and Canadians aren’t impressed[/video_embed]
