Kelly Ripa demonstrated some helpful home haircut tips, using her son as a guinea pig

It’s official: now that we’re at least six weeks along, we’ve hit the ‘Time to get serious about home haircuts’ phase of the pandemic. That idea we’ve been toying with in a cute ‘Should we or shouldn’t we?’ kind of way has, for some of us, reached a point where we no longer have a choice (see what’s happening on Ryan Seacrest’s head for one glaring example). On yesterday’s installment of Live with Kelly and Ryan, the hosts welcomed NYC-based professional barber Xavier Cruz to give them a demonstration in home haircutting. Using his exceedingly handsome husband as his hair model, Cruz demonstrated grooming techniques using only clippers, scissors, and a simple comb. Easy, right?To demonstrate just how DIY-able a home haircut is for a non-pro, Ripa and Seacrest and even Gelman joined in on the virtual salon session. Kelly went to work on her 22-year-old son Michael’s longish locks while Ryan made the ultimate do-it-yourself attempt on his own hair. Seacrest had been considering growing out his mane until it was long enough to style in a top knot, but Ripa took to Instagram to subtly encourage her co-host not to wait that long.

Jokes aside, the video does come with some helpful home haircut tips: don’t throw a towel around your shoulders in place of one of those silky capes they give you at the salon — the bulkiness will only impede your snipping skills. Instead, wear an old t-shirt. And don’t go for a completely different style, no matter what Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton try to tell you. Home haircuts are about tidying and maintenance, not coming out of quarantine with a new lewk. Lastly, go slow… we do have a LOT of time after all.
