The popstar used to work at the store and dreamt of making its playlist – now she's done one better.

Imagine growing up to become a massive star, so big that one day you return to your old employer – but as the face of the brand.

That's exactly what happened to Katy Perry, who is the face of Gap's All Together Now holiday campaign, bringing her back to one of her very first jobs for a truly full-circle moment.

"One of my first jobs when I was 16 was folding the fleece aisle at Gap in Santa Barbara," she shared with People this week. "They would play this iconic playlist of musicians. My dream then was to make that Gap playlist — to make that Gap playlist was so cool, all the cool kids were on it. Little did I know that 20 years later, I would be starring in one of those iconic Gap commercials. It's just such a rite of passage. And I got to cover a Beatles song. It was a little bit of a bucket list moment."

Perry does indeed get her Beatles moment, singing her own version of "All You Need Is Love" – not that it wasn't nerve-wracking to take on the classic.

"You don't want to mess up a Beatles song," she said. "And also once you put it out on streaming it just exists forever. That's just tragic. So I took my time with it."

As part of Perry's partnership with the beloved brand, with every Spotify stream of her cover, Gap will donate $1 (up to $100,000) to celeb favourite charity Baby2Baby, which provides kids living in poverty with all the day-to-day basics, from diapers to food to soap.

"I got to pick my charity of choice, and as I found out, it is a huge responsibility bringing a life into this world," she said, having just had daughter Daisy Dove with fiancé Orlando Bloom in August 2020. "The basic needs sometimes can be overwhelming, and I can't imagine how some people can't even meet those basic needs. Diapers and formula and all this new stuff that is necessary. It's just a feel good thing, and that's priceless to me."

You'll likely catch Perry's Gap ad on TV in no time, and spot her wearing heritage classics, including those unforgettable logo sweatshirts, a denim jacket and pink sweatsuit. Actually, just expect a lot of pink.

"I got to wear pink sweats in the commercial. I never wear sweats. That was nice," she added. "The Gap sweatshirt is iconic. It's even so iconic, there's this crazy secondary market of like vintage gap clothes. You find these in high prices on whether it's eBay or special collectors places, because it's just so iconic and such a staple and people want it from like the early 2000s."

It almost sounds like Perry is a legit Gap fan and, honestly, we're happy for her getting to cross this off her bucket list. As she said to Vogue, “I feel like these Gap commercials are iconic. You’ve seen them for decades and all my icons have been in one. Orlando was in one of them. I finally got my own moment.”

That's one for Orlando and one for Katy. Though if Gap can get him in pink sweats, too, we'd be down for a couple's ad? Yes? No?
