Late on Thursday, Instagram got a new record-breaking mass-following when actor (or “occasional thespian” as he puts it in his bio) Johnny Depp joined Instagram. Seeing Johnny Depp on social media is definitely out of character for the notoriously recluse and spotlight-avoiding actor who has a reputation as soft-spoken and shy, and those qualities definitely shone through in his first three posts. Nevertheless, Jen Aniston, your Instagram reign might be usurped! He’s got 2.2 million followers in under a day!Direct from what looks like a wine cellar (he does own a chateau in Saint-Tropez, France), the Pirates of the Caribbean star posted a snap of his film set up, that included a bajillion candles and a few Persian rugs, as he sat on a bench wearing suspenders, a plaid shirt, and a camo sweater tied round his waist, showing off his wonderfully-tatt’d sleeves for us to enjoy. “Filming something for you now, gimme a minute,” he captioned the pic, and we all waited with baited breath to see what was eating our What’s Eating Gilbert Grape hero.A few hours later, he delivered an 8 minute monologue direct to camera, speaking about how social media is so foreign to him but he felt now was the time to join. “I don't think I've really ever felt any particular reason to [join Instagram] until now." But he went on to say that, "as the threat of this invisible enemy has already caused immeasurable tragedies and damage to people's lives,” he decided that his words could offer some comfort and hope. “We can care and through caring, we will help each other and we will prevail. Caring is as close as the eye can see.”

He also spent the 8 minutes pushing the need during this time for all of us to stay safe, stay home, and to use these days to our advantage.“We need to make the best use of this time by being close to those we love despite our dire circumstances,” he said in his shy but deep voice. “We cannot and must not succumb to shutting down and giving into what feels like hellish quarantine monotony. We have to keep ourselves curious as this time in isolation can be used for great learning.”He then plugged his new musical collab with Jeff Beck: a cover of John Lennon’s ‘Isolation,’ which we can all agree is an apropos song for this day and age.A quick look at who he currently follows on Insta revealed that he’s following his ex-partner, and mother of his children, Vanessa Paradis. Aw, that’s nice. He’s also following his daughter, Lily Rose Depp. He’s not, however, following most recent ex Amber Heard. In fact, although he didn’t mention her by name, he did thank his fans for their backing as of late. “Before I go, on a more personal note: Thank you all for your kindness, your unwavering support and your strength over these years,” he said. “I am touched beyond words.” Although their divorce recently was finalized, he is suing her in a $50 million defamation suit.[video_embed id='1941534']Before you go: Watch out for these Canadian Emergency Response Benefit scam text messages[/video_embed]
