Before he married America’s Sweetheart Chrissy Teigen, John Legend fell seriously short of being the best kind of boyfriend. This, according to his own admission during an appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. Shepard led Legend down the path to brutal honesty by opening up about his own romantic past and record of infidelity.Legend, too, admitted to having a history of cheating. “Definitely in my twenties," he told Shepard and co-host Monica Padman. "I think what happened for me — you go through a lot of your life in your teens and I was younger than everybody in high school and college, and so I just didn't get a lot of girls. When I started to get that attention, I loved it."[video_embed id='1968994']RELATED: John Legend and Kanye West have gone their separate ways[/video_embed]"I escaped 'technically cheating' by keeping my relationship ill-defined,” explained Legend. “But it was really cheating. I definitely was dishonest and selfish.” Once Legend became famous, the pattern continued as the singer leveraged his fame and “took advantage of that.”With age, experience, and meeting former model Chrissy Teigen, Legend changed his tune. "We've talked about it before, but we had sex the first night and hit it off. We were both seeing other people at the time. There was kind of a looseness at the very beginning, but we fell in love not long after that."The pair were married in 2013 and have since become everyone’s favourite celebrity couple — just ask Teigen’s 13 million Twitter followers. Legend is well aware of his wife’s massive social media fanbase (he has 13 million of his own fans on the platform but everyone knows that Twitter popularity is about engagement) and he says it’s just one of the many things that keep him honest. "I feel like it almost makes it less likely that I would do anything to f--k it up... If I were to do anything, it would be career suicide," he joked. All kidding aside, Legend credits his own personal evolution as a partner and a human being for his enduring commitment to Teigen, which is nice to hear — because the cliche of that one “perfect” woman being able to change a cheating man is beyond tired. "At a certain point, you just realize you're happier being honest. You're happier being faithful and being in love with one person,” said Legend. “I just decided that person was Chrissy. I decided I wasn't gonna mess with somebody else anymore."[video_embed id='1994406']BEFORE YOU GO: Try these self-massage techniques to soothe your aches and pains[/video_embed]
