Jessica Simpson worried John Mayer was too smart for her

Should we be worried about the level of intelligence our partners have in comparison to our own?

Jessica Simpson recently revealed in her memoir, Open Book, that she often felt insecure during her relationship with musician John Mayer.

In 2006, following her divorce with Nick Lachey, Jessica recalled being smitten by Mayer’s charm stating, “He’d walk into a room and pick up his guitar and you’d swoon”. After the two dated in secret for a couple of months, Jessica was in love.

Although Mayer made Jessica feel amazing, he also made her feel insecure, which heightened her existing anxiety. Jessica feared disappointing John so much, that in some cases she would have her friends proofread her texts to eradicate the thought of him potentially thinking negative of her.

She wrote, “I constantly worried that I wasn’t smart enough for him”.

Priding her ability to avoid falling into the dumb blonde stereotype she was frequently type-casted as, she began to question herself around her boyfriend. That self-doubt turned into anxiety and left Jessica to turn to alcohol in order to calm her nerves.

The relationship ended after John divulged their sex life during a Playboy interview, by referring to her as a “sexual napalm”. Once her trust was broken, Jessica said “I erased his number. He made it easy for me to walk away.”
