It’s been 13 years since actor Isaiah Washington was fired from Grey’s Anatomy (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on CTV) and for some reason the actor has decided that now is the best time for him to slam his former co-star Katherine Heigl. In a tweet posted on November 16, Washington shared a picture of Heigl and reignited a feud that is more than a decade old. Isn’t 2020 bad enough? Do we really need to start going through back catalogues for more hits?“This woman once proclaimed that I should ‘never’ be allowed to speak publicly again,” tweeted Washington next to a picture of Heigl. “The world agreed with her proclamation back then and protested for my job and my head in 65 languages. I wish I was on Twitter in 2007, because I will NEVER stop exercising my free speech.” Since we’re time traveling for this post, Twitter was formed in 2006 and became popular in 2012, so again, why are we talking about this in 2020? Washington has had plenty of time to come for Heigl. This year is already bad enough. One of Washington’s followers asked for clarification on Heigl’s identity and Washington did not hold back. The actor, who played Dr. Preston Burke on the first three seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, replied to another follower and insinuated that he did not return to the medical drama because of his ‘dignity and integrity.’ Washington also alleged on Twitter that Chandra Wilson, who plays Miranda Bailey on Grey’s Anatomy, has insider information on the events that led to Washington being fired by ABC. Let’s leave Dr. Bailey out of this, okay? She’s already dealing with a COVID hospital. The actor also used his latest Twitter showing to remind his followers that he’s a Trump supporter. So, there’s that. Washington was a fan favorite on Grey’s Anatomy during the show’s first three seasons. The actor won two NAACP awards and a SAG award for his portrayal of Dr. Burke. In October 2006, reports surfaced that Washington had a verbal spat on set with co-star Patrick Dempsey, at which time he used a homophobic slur to describe co-star TR Knight. Shortly after news of the fight was leaked by the media, Knight publicly came out. Remember the toxic workplace Ellen Pompeo talked about in 2019? This is what she meant.Washington issued a statement apologizing for his language, but the subject once again came up at the 2007 Golden Globes in January when Washington told reporters backstage "No, I did not call T.R. a f----t. Never happened, never happened. There is no way I could do anything so vile, and so horrible, not only to a castmate but to a fellow human being."Following Washington’s comments, Heigl told Access Hollywood “I’m going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period. I’m sorry, that did not need to be said, I’m not okay with it.”Washington issued a second apology but in June that year ABC announced that they would not be renewing his contract. Washington did reprise his role as Dr. Burke in 2014 in a guest appearance on Grey’s Anatomy after both Heigl and Knight had left the show.Heigl, who played Dr. Izzie Stevens for the first six seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, has recently been in the news again after an interview with showrunner Krista Vernoff appeared in The Los Angeles Times this month. Heigl is long rumored to have had a contentious exit from Grey’s Anatomy, which Vernoff addressed in her latest interview, telling the Times that “there was a resolution to Izzie’s story. We had planned to have her come back for an episode to really properly tie up Izzie and Alex (Justin Chambers). And I wrote that episode, and it was beautiful. The day before it was supposed to start prepping or shooting, I can’t remember, we got a call that Katie wasn’t coming. Just wasn’t coming. Wasn’t going to do it.”According to Vernoff, she spent several days trying to rewrite a script that would address Heigl leaving the show without the actor actually appearing in the episode. “I’m not saying that to bash Katie. I don’t know what was happening in her life. I don’t know what led to that decision,” said Vernoff. “All I know is that the night before a thing is supposed to start shooting that is entirely centered on one character and the completion of her story arc, I got a phone call that she wasn’t coming to do it. That’s what it is to be a TV writer and producer. So, yeah, do I wish I could go back and do that differently? Sure.”Following Vernoff’s interview, a source close to Heigl denied the showrunners claims to Vanity Fair. “This account isn’t true. Krista is mistaken,” said the source. “Katherine was back in LA after parental leave (when she adopted her daughter) waiting to be called to set.”Heigl’s Izzie Stevens recently had a pseudo-resurrection on the show after Justin Chambers made a surprise announcement in January 2020 that he was leaving the series after 16 seasons. Chambers did not return to film his final episodes, leaving the writers scrambling to craft an exit for the character that made sense. Chambers eventually did return only to deliver a voiceover that explained his character was now living with Heigl’s Izzie, his ex-wife, after finding out she had used his sperm to impregnant herself and had been raising their twins.Well…the writers worked with what they had.[video_embed id='2078544']Before you go: These broomstick scooters are the perfect gift for any serious 'Harry Potter' fan[/video_embed]
