Comic book fans love a good origin story and we just got a new one about Wolverine and Deadpool. After almost a decade of publicly trolling one another, Hugh Jackman has revealed how his friendly feud with Ryan Reynolds began. It all started with Black Widow. We’re going to need another Avengers film for this.Jackman is currently in quarantine with his family in New York City and the Australian actor gave a phone interview to
The Daily Beast about his upcoming HBO film
Bad Education, which is set to premiere on April 25. When asked about his longstanding feud with Reynolds, Jackman revealed that it started on the set of 2009’s
X-Men: Wolverine, which marked Reynolds’ debut as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool.“How did it start? It’s gone back so long now… God, this is a classic sign where your feud has gone too long, where you don’t even know why or how it started,” joked Jackman. “I met him [Reynolds] back on Wolverine, and I used to ream him because I was very close friends with Scarlett [Johansson], and Scarlett had just married Ryan, so when he came on set I was like, Hey, you better be on your best behavior here, pal, because I’m watching, and we started ribbing each other that way, and then it all escalated with the Deadpool thing and him calling me out, and trying to manipulate me through social media to do what he wanted.”Jackman and Johansson starred in two films together in 2006,
The Prestige and
Scoop. Johansson began dating Reynolds the following year and the pair were married from 2008 until 2011. Reynolds and wife Blake Lively have been married since 2012 and share three daughters together. The longtime friends teased one another in interviews and even in concert (
Jackman can sing and deliver burns at the same time), but their best work has been done on social media. Most recently, Reynolds commented on
Jackman’s 24th anniversary tribute to his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness. The Canadian actor jumped into the comments, with a cheeky “Hang in there, Deb.” According to Jackman, he is currently working on a response, but jokes that it’s not healthy to spend the entire day plotting against your nemesis. “I try to limit it to five hours a day, planning retribution,” laughs Jackman. “I’ve found in the past that it just gets unhealthy if it’s more than five hours of obsessing over how to get Ryan Reynolds. But five hours is good and healthy and keeps me strong and ready.”Reynolds and Jackman’s commitment to their feud is impressive considering how busy they have been supporting frontline workers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Jackman has been posting messages celebrating medical workers while he’s under quarantine and Reynolds has been making
huge donations to food banks and hospitals in Canada and the US. On Thursday, Reynolds shared a new video showing the actor wearing a purposely ugly t-shirt that is being sold for charity. Working with Canadian companies and other celebs like hockey star
Hayley Wickenheiser, Reynolds has helped create
Conquer COVID19 to raise money that will be used to buy personal protective equipment for medical workers.
