Like many of us, quarantine has affected how Hilary Duff and her family of four utilize their home. Playrooms are now classrooms, outdoor spaces are the only safe way to visit with friends while physically distancing, and a casual interest in gardening is now a safe way to access food. The pop singer and TV star opened her blush-colored front door to
Architectural Digest to show how her home has changed over the past decade, especially in the last six months.Duff's warm and welcoming two-story house was bought by the now-32-year-old eight years ago, shortly before the birth of her son Luca. After divorcing Luca’s dad, Canadian NHL player Mike Comerie, Duff remarried musician Matthew Koma and the pair welcomed their daughter Banks in 2018. These seismic shifts in her personal life inspired Duff to completely renovate the home twice, admitting that she has a slight addiction to decorating.
The latest iteration of Duff’s home was created with the help of interior designers David Ko, Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl. Speaking to AD, Duff said that she wanted her home to not only look beautiful but be comfortable for her children to live in. “This house is used by kids,” said Duff. “We have found this really nice balance. I care a lot about interior design, and I do like to invest in furniture—but furniture that I feel like I’m going to love and reuse in many different ways, and also that my kids can, like, climb on and beat up a little bit. Now, it feels like our family’s home.”Taking the AD cameras on a tour through the 5,260-square-foot Georgian-style Beverly Hills house, Duff revealed that the recent quarantine has resulted in changes in several areas of the home. The playroom her children share now includes a desk and computer for Luca to complete virtual school. Like many parents, Duff has been thrown into the role of the teacher since the pandemic started and that means keeping her midcentury bar cart fully stocked. An outdoor space in her stunning backyard provides enough room for Duff to set up chairs that are six feet apart, providing a safe area for the actor to visit with friends while physically distancing. Duff also proudly showed off her herb garden and chicken coop, which began as a casual hobby and has now become a necessity since trips to the grocery store have become ventures riddled with anxiety and fear.
The outside of Duff’s home also offers ample protection for the
Younger star and her family, thanks to its high hedges and mountainside backing. This was an especially important factor for the longtime entertainer when purchasing the home after having spent years dodging paparazzi.Sharing the personal touches of the home, Duff revealed her oversized bathroom where she films beauty tutorials for Instagram. This is also the space where Duff delivered her daughter Banks during a home birth two years ago. Following the arrival of her daughter, Duff says that she had to move her son Luca to a room further down the hall in order to be closer to the nursery, but made up for it by giving him what is arguably the coolest kid’s room we have ever seen.
