Is Gwen Stefani trying to erase the past? Some fans are feeling like maybe she is after an Instagram post that the performer shared ahead of her performance of “Happy Anywhere” with Blake Shelton at the ACM Awards. In a September 16 post Stefani seemingly threw shade at her ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale, when she posted a photo of them in the 1990s (they were babies!), but replaced his face with that of her current beau. “#datenight @acmawards w my boo,” she added in the caption.

To compare, here’s the original photo, which Stefani shared with her fans back in 2014—a year before she and Rossdale ended their 13 year marriage following allegations that he had cheated.

Fans immediately had reactions to the updated post, with some calling Stefani out for trying to change the past. “This is kind of a slap in the face to Gavin lol” wrote one fan. “Although you may try, you cannot erase history or the past. True 90s kids know Gavin is in the original pic. Smh,” wrote another. Not all fans hated the updated snap though. Others loved the post, pointing out that this is how you make sure your ex is actually out of the picture. "You did NOT with this photoshopping!!!!" one said, capturing many other fans’ emotions. “CAN YOU HEAR ME SCREAMING, what an incredible upgrade from the original too,” wrote someone else. Some celebs weighed in on the tweaks too. The Kelly Clarkson Show’s official account asked, “How can we like this more than once?” musician Liza simply wrote, “Iconic,” and WWE star Lea Van Dale added, “Love.” For his part, Shelton didn’t comment on the “throwback,” but he did add his own throwback photo on Instagram a few days prior that may have inspired Stefani’s post.

Shelton and Stefani were first romantically linked a few months after her separation from Rossdale, having met as coaches on The Voice. Their relationship has continued evolving since then, with the pair recently moving into a $13 million California home with Stefani’s three boys, whom she shares with Rossdale. The pair will also be back in the public eye when they return to the coaches’ chairs on the upcoming season of The Voice, which kicks off October 19 on CTV. (Check out eTalk’s list of fall debuts here.)While Stefani’s stellar photoshopping skills may be confusing, this isn’t the first time she’s done it. Last year the singer also added Shelton to a throwback photo that she posted to the ‘gram, perhaps proving that the recent post wasn’t so much meant to shade Rossdale as to celebrate just how much she loves Shelton.
