Glenn Close had some thoughts on Gwyneth Paltrow's Oscar win for Best Actress for her role in Shakespeare In Love at the 71st Academy Awards in March 1999. The actress spoke her mind during an appearance on Popcorn with Peter Travers to promote her new film, Hillbilly Elegy. The 73-year-old actress shared her support for Fernanda Montenegro (who was also nominated for Best Actress that year) and implied Gwyneth wouldn't have been her choice of winner. Close's comments came up when Travers mentioned how he was "most pissed off" when she didn't win an Oscar for her role in The Wife. He said that Close is very gracious when it comes to things like that and asked her how she handles those scenarios."Well, I got nominated for my first movie, which was The World According to Garp, and I honestly feel that to be nominated by your peers is about as good as it gets. And then I never understood how you could honestly compare performances," Close said. "I remember the year Gwyneth Paltrow won over that incredible actress who was in Central Station. And I thought, ‘What?’ It’s like, you know, it doesn’t make sense.” Close said that she thinks whoever wins the award has a lot to do with whether the film "has traction, publicity and how much money do they have to put it out in everybody's sight." She added that she has no choice but to be "philosophical about it" since it really is so subjective. Close also said that she's "very proud" of the times that her peers thought her performances were worthy of "attention," while Travers added that she'd been nominated seven different times. "That's 3 Emmys, that's 3 Tonys. There's a lot of awards there," he said.[video_embed id='6011299201001']RELATED: Gwyneth Paltrow thinks psychedelic drugs are the future[/video_embed]Close has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in The World According to Garp, The Big Chill and The Natural. She's also been nominated for Best Actress for Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs and The Wife.  She said if she were to win an Oscar now, it would be "so sad" because if it happens, "when we're all unable to celebrate in a room together, that would be ironic, but that's what life does."Central Station is the 1998 Brazilian-French drama starring Montenegro and Vinícius de Oliveira. Montenegro was nominated for Best Actress at the 71st Academy Awards in 1999 along with Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love, Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth, Meryl Streep for One True Thing and Emily Watson for Hilary and Jackie. The film was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film but lost to the Italian film Life Is Beautiful. It tends to be a hard road for International/foreign films at the Academy Awards, but we saw a change in 2020 when Parasite (stream now on Crave) made history by taking home three major wins outside the foreign film category. Parasite's director Bong Joon-ho won Best Original Screenplay and Best Director at last year's Oscars in addition to Best International Film. It made history by becoming the first non-English language film to win Best Picture for the Academy's top award.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Puppy works smart not hard to escapes gate [/video_embed]
