Eva Mendes might not like revealing
too much of her personal life with partner Ryan Gosling and their two daughters, Esmeralda and Amada. But that doesn’t mean she never opens up about them. Case in point? The actor revealed in a new interview that before meeting Ryan she wasn’t even sure she wanted babies.“I never wanted babies before until I fell in love with Ryan,”
she revealed on the Australian radio show
Fitzy & Wippa, “It kind of worked out to where I was 40 and having my first baby. I think I was 42 for the second one, so it worked out in that way that I had a career and then I changed my focus to my family.”The quotes stemmed from a larger conversation that Mendes and the hosts were having about whether the 46-year-old was considering going back to work after taking six years off to raise her girls. “I am now that [my kids] are getting a bit older, but I really feel like I never want to send the wrong message to young women out there,” she said about being ready for a return. “It’s not an either/or situation,” she explained. “I was lucky enough to work my bum off for 20 years.”
Mendes and Gosling met on the set of
The Place Beyond the Pines roughly 10 years ago and they started dating soon afterwards. The couple are so private that fans can’t even figure out if they
ever officially married, although at this point in their relationship it’s safe to say they’re
pretty darned solid. Shortly after committing to each other and having their daughters, Mendes quietly stepped out of the spotlight. Her last acting gig was in 2014 when she starred in
Lost River, which also happened to be Gosling’s directorial debut. Before that Mendes had quite the busy career indeed. The actor starred in everything from
Hitch alongside Will Smith and
Ghost Rider with Nicholas Cage, to
Once Upon a Time in Mexico with Johnny Depp and
The Other Guys with Mark Wahlberg. She’s also been in movies like
Training Day,
All About the Benjamins, and
Girl in Progress. In other words? Her impressive resume still makes her one of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood, despite the time off.
While Mendes has obviously enjoyed her time parenting so far and chosen
not to employ any nannies, this isn’t the first time she’s spoken about returning to work. Earlier this month she also said she might like to go back to her former daily grind while speaking with the
Sydney Morning Herald. "I feel like, as far as my ambition, it didn’t go away, it just shifted onto the children," she said. "I applaud and look up to those women who can do it all, but I'm not one of them. Thankfully, I have a choice not to work and I realize how fortunate I am that it's even a choice. I've been so happy to be able to incubate with my babies, but now they are four and six, I'm starting to feel like my ambition is coming back.”Considering how much fans have missed seeing her work onscreen, something tells us people will be more than excited to see her back in action.[video_embed id='1916119']RELATED: Eva Mendes has always had a nuanced outlook on relationships[/video_embed]
