When singer Demi Lovato returned to the stage — at the Grammy’s no less — after a two-year hiatus, her fans were elated. They knew about the personal struggle with substance abuse, mental health, and addiction that Lovato had been plagued by. What none of us really know, however, is what Demi’s path to recovery looked like. That’s the story she’ll be sharing in a new four-episode docuseries being produced by YouTube. This isn’t the first time Lovato has partnered with the online video-sharing platform. In 2017, she released the YouTube original, Simply Complicated. That film centered on the performer’s behind-the-scenes process and told the story of her long career, one that reached back to her child-star days on Barney and Friends (or ex-Friends, if you’re up on the latest news about her relationship with Barney co-star Selena Gomez). The 27-year-old Lovato began working as an actor at age 10 before landing several Disney Channel roles and eventually launching a singing career.[video_embed id='6017055500001']RELATED: Demi Lovato is killing it at Jiu-Jitzu[/video_embed]The new series will switch gears and look at Lovato’s period of downtime instead, examining the time that led up to and included a serious overdose that put her in the hospital for two weeks in July of 2018. She’ll also share her story about her personal road to recovery. Lovato spent 60 days in a rehabilitation facility in Chicago beginning in August of 2018 to focus on her sobriety, mental health, and overall wellness. It wasn’t until January of this year that she launched her comeback with a new single and back-to-back performances at both the Grammys and the Super Bowl where the singer belted out the American national anthem.Since then, Lovato has returned to the limelight in full force, accidentally crashing boyfriend Max Ehrich’s Instagram live videos while using her own platform to advocate for racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement. Later today, Lovato will perform in a virtual celebration of Pride to mark the anniversary of Stonewall alongside big names like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and President Barack Obama.[video_embed id='1984002']BEFORE YOU GO: Our hosts try the frozen cereal challenge[/video_embed]
