Chris Rock was the latest guest on Naomi Campbell’s YouTube series
No Filter With Naomi and he covered some surprising topics with the supermodel, including her short-lived relationship with boxer Mike Tyson and his efforts to get rapper Cardi B a comedy special. Okurrr? Campbell and Rock discussed their decades of friendship, which included years of Rock lusting after the supermodel. Get in line, Chris. The longtime friends first met while Campbell was working at a coffee shop in Union Station before she became a supermodel. “We were all lusting for you. You were a supermodel to us, even then,” said Rock. The friends often hung out with Mike Tyson, who Campbell dated for a short period. “I think Mike pushed you out of a moving car one night,” said Rock. “I think you gave somebody your number and he lost his head.”“You sure it wasn’t me that pushed him?” asked Campbell laughing. “That’s even if I got in the car with him. He wasn’t the best driver.”[video_embed id='2004641']RELATED: Naomi Campbell reacts to Anna Wintour’s note on Vogue’s lack of diversity[/video_embed]While Campbell doesn’t appear to remember being pushed from a moving vehicle, which is hopefully a sign that is didn’t happen, it appears that things between the boxer and model are in a much healthier place now. “It’s a good thing we’re all grown-ups today and we’re family,” said Campbell, adding that she’s excited to watch Tyson
return to the ring next week. “I’m really happy for him. He’s like family, in a way. It’s just nice to see him blossom,” said Campbell. “We’ve all survived,” added Rock.
During the pair’s 45-minute discussion, Rock also revealed his surprising pick for the funniest comedian in the world – Cardi B. Rock said that he first saw the Grammy winner on Instagram five years ago and had his team contact her management. “We had a meeting about her doing a comedy show. I thought she was the funniest woman I had ever seen. I didn’t know she rapped at all. I was just like, yo, how do we sit down and figure out a show, but I couldn’t get the Comedy Central people to jump on,” said Rock. “They just didn’t get it.”Instead of working with Cardi, Rock went on to produce
The Rundown With Robin Thede. “Robin is easier for white people to digest,” said Rock of the
Emmy-nominated comedian. “But the reality is I tried to get Cardi B and I couldn’t get it done. That’s the real scoop.”The interview also took several serious turns, including Campbell’s opening
tribute to Chadwick Boseman. The death of the 43-year-old actor was
announced on August 28 and confirmed by his reps, who revealed the
Black Panther star had been battling Stage III colon cancer for four years. “I’d like to say that in the short time I got to know Chadwick Boseman, he was a humble being, selfless, graceful, dignified and so respectful. I know the whole world is grieving and the whole world is in shock and I know our culture is grieving,” said Campbell. “I’d like to say, Chadwick Boseman, may you rest with the highest. You will be forever in our memories. With what you’ve achieved, you’ve left a huge legacy at your young age and I’m truly blessed with the time that I got to know you. What a true gentleman you were. Rest in peace.”Rock and Campbell also touched on how addiction has affected them and their shared concerns for friends who are battling drug dependency in quarantine. “Addiction has given me more pain and suffering, just friends and family, than racism,” said Rock. “When I think about people I lost, literally lost, and when I say lost, some of them aren’t even dead. You just lost them. The person you were friends with isn’t alive anymore.”Campbell,
who has been sober for years, said that now that she’s in a position to sponsor others, she’s had to learn that you can’t save people who don’t want to save themselves. “I want to take on the ones that I know really want this. They want to change their lives. They really want to stay sober.”[video_embed id='2003275']Before you go: Ed Sheeran opens up about addiction in rare interview[/video_embed]
