The votes are not in. At least not all of them. Election day in the US has come and gone, but with millions of outstanding votes still to be counted, it could be weeks before the American people and the rest of the world know who will take office in January. For the most divisive election in modern US history, people around the world, including celebrities, have been glued to their screens watching the results unfold in real time.Early Wednesday morning, President Trump declared a premature victory even though millions of votes are still being counted. The president said that he would go to the Supreme Court to stop the vote counting in states like Arizona, where Joe Biden is leading. Trump is currently leading in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, three states he turned red in 2016, but there are still thousands of votes, including many mail ballots, that have yet to be counted in these states. According to The Hill, these votes are expected to trend towards a Biden presidency. As noted by CNN, there is no law that says a winner must be declared on Election Day. During the 2000 election, President Bush was not declared the winner until December. Federal law says that states have until December 8 to confirm a winner. While Trump already upset many Republicans on Wednesday morning by using the term ‘fraud’ to describe the current election, Biden is urging people to remain patient and wait until all the votes are counted.Reactions on Twitter towards the ongoing vote have understandably been emotional. During the early hours of November 4, Kanye West finally read the votes and the room, admitting defeat. West also announced his candidacy for 2024. Oh, Kanye. Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande used the final hours of Election Day to continue encouraging their fans to vote. Chrissy Teigen described the very different fears between Democrats and Republicans. John Legend urged people to remain calm while the votes are still being counted. Sarah Silverman was devastated to find out there would be no rose ceremony to distract the US from its impending doom. Roots drummer Questlove described what this close election means for BIPOC in America. Comedian Patton Oswalt sarcastically announced his family’s Election Day festivities. Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian acknowledged on Tuesday night that a winner would not be announced. Like many Canadians, Jann Arden is stress-watching the news from home. Popstar Lights is also watching the election and has agreed to work as an Emotional Support Canadian. Jimmy Kimmel described our collective need for anesthesia. James Corden offered some calming techniques. The Princess Bride star Cary Elwes noted that many Americans are fine voting for a President who can’t spell ‘polls.’ Glee star Kevin McHale didn’t mince his words for Trump supporters. Thankfully, there were some shining moments of hope on Election Day. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan all kept their seats in Congress. The whole squad is here. Sarah McBride won her state of Delaware, making the Democrat the first openly transgender state senator in the US. Also, Democratic New Yorkers Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones became the first two openly gay Black men elected to Congress.
