Cameron Diaz talks about being a new mom in the age of physical distancing

Cameron Diaz spent years playing a parent on screen in feature films like Sex Tape and What To Expect When You’re Expecting, but now that the actor has retired from acting, she’s fulfilling her best role yet – real mom. The notoriously private star opened up about motherhood this week, calling it the ‘best part’ of her life.Diaz and husband Benji Madden made the surprise announcement in January that the pair were new parents to baby Raddix. The couple didn’t specify whether Diaz had carried their daughter or if she was born via surrogate or adopted, but the pair were clear in the adoration of the infant. “We are so happy, blessed and grateful to begin this new decade by announcing the birth of our daughter, Raddix Madden. She has instantly captured our hearts and completed our family,” wrote Diaz and Madden in a post both celebrities shared on their social media pages. “We won’t be posting pictures or sharing any more details, other than the fact that she is really really cute! It’s the best, best, best part of my life,” said Diaz via People. “I’m so, so grateful and so happy and it’s the best thing ever and I’m so lucky to get to do it with Benji and we’re just having the best time. It’s so great. I’m just thrilled.”Like many new parents, Diaz and Madden were already living in a ‘bubble’ that included a lot of time spent at home before the quarantine measures were put into place for COVID-19. “I’ve kinda been living a quarantine life anyhow because I have a three-month-old, or a three-and-a-half-month old. So my life has been completely quiet and still for the last few months,” said Diaz, who noted that the biggest change has been a lack of visitors. “But I was able to have my friends over all the time. And now I just don’t see anybody.”

Diaz said the parents have already set up their nighttime routine with Raddix, which includes cooking for mom and possibly a lullaby from her rocker dad. “After we do bath time with our baby and we put her to sleep, Benji puts her to bed, he’s so good. He’s such an amazing father,” Diaz told Powers. “I’m so lucky he’s my baby’s daddy. He’s so incredible. He puts her down and I go into the kitchen and I start dinner and I pour myself a nice glass of red wine. I start my cooking, I put on my show, whatever it is.”Noting that it’s a strange time to not be able to venture out into the world, Diaz said that she’s doing her best to keep her focus on the immediate future. “The way I’m making it through this time is by staying in the present,” said Diaz. “I stay in the here and now.”Diaz unofficially retired from acting in 2018 and hasn’t appeared in a major feature film since 2014. As for Madden, he continues to release new music and tour with his band Good Charlotte. The pair met in 2014 and were married the following year. Although they’re not often spotted together, the happy couple have made their feelings for one another clear over the years in interviews and emotional social media posts.
