Billie Eilish is continuing to be an important voice in mainstream media and not just for her music. During the singer’s
March tour date in Miami, Eilish debuted “Not My Responsibility” and stunned fans with her poetic short film that slammed body shamers. Now Eilish has released the complete short film and created must-see content for everyone and her fans couldn't be happier. In the video produced by Eilish, the 18-year-old stands alone in a dark room and slowly undresses, starting in a black hoody and eventually removing the sweater, as well as a button down shirt and a tank top until she’s left standing in her bra. Eilish’s voice can be overheard in the video as she recites moving and powerful words on body shaming.[video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Coachella 2019 brought together Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish[/video_embed]"Would you like me to be smaller? Weaker? Softer? Taller? Would you like me to be quiet? Do my shoulders provoke you? Does my chest? Am I my stomach? My hips? The body I was born with, is it not what you wanted,” says Eilish. Showcasing the double standard that women everywhere are held to daily, Eilish continues, saying "If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed layers, I'm a slut. Though you've never seen my body, you still judge it—and judge me for it. Why make assumptions about people based on their size?"Eilish finishes the nearly four-minute video by slowly descending into a pool of thick, black water as the final, powerful lines are delivered. "We decide who they are. We decide what they're worth. If I wear more, if I wear less—who decides what that makes me? What that means? Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?"
The stunning film isn’t the first time Eilish has spoken about her struggle to accept her body. Appearing in a
2019 Calvin Klein ad, Eilish said that part of her desire to wear oversized clothing is to help protect herself from unwanted comments. “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘she’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat ass,’ ‘she’s got a fat ass,’” says Billie. “No one can say any of that because they don’t know.”In January, Eilish took a trip to Hawaii and
shared videos of herself in a bikini while swimming with friends. Speaking to
Dazed Magazine, Eilish said the reaction to her post was swift. “It was trending. There were comments like, ‘I don’t like her any more because as soon as she turns 18 she’s a whore.’ Like, dude. I can’t win. I can-not win.” And that’s why Billie's empowering message about how other people's reaction to her body is
#notmyresponsibility is resonating with fans.Following the outbreak of COVID-19 and cancellation of her 53-date
Where Do We Go? World Tour, Eilish has continued to use her voice to help others, including performing during several virtual benefits like
The iHeart Living Room Concert and
One World: Together At Home. Eilish is also helping to keep fans safe and raise money for musicians as part of the MusiCares “
We’ve Got You Covered” charity, which released a line of celebrity-approved masks.[video_embed id='1964716']RELATED: You have to see this father and daughter duo's cover of Lady Gaga's 'Shallow'[/video_embed]
