Mothers are tough, and no one knows that better than Amy Schumer. In her new three-part docuseries Expecting Amy, the comedian gives a candid look at the exciting and challenging pregnancy she had with her first child Gene, which was marred by ongoing severe sickness and hospital visits as a result of her debilitating hyperemesis gravidarum diagnosis. Not only did Schumer have to navigate her difficult pregnancy while continuing to work as a stand up, but she did so in the public eye. The documentary doesn’t debut until tomorrow, but in an exclusive new clip, Schumer reveals how she evaded the paparazzi early in her pregnancy with a little help from her sister-in-law.Joined by her husband Chris Fischer, the couple are riding the subway in New York when they tell cameras about how they avoided the paparazzi with help from Fischer’s sister, Molly Fischer. “The day after she announced her pregnancy we had a lot of paparazzi outside waiting, so Molly dressed up as her,” said Fischer, adding that his sister took Schumer’s hooded sweatshirt, sunglasses, hat and dog to use as cover. “We kept telling Molly, you have to look shittier and shittier and shittier until she was literally a homeless guy wearing a Hello Dolly sweatshirt,” laughs Schumer. The comedian had an appointment that she didn’t want made public, so Molly got into Fischer’s car and the pair drove around New York for hours while the paparazzi tailed them. The new clips also provide a glimpse into the relentless mental and emotional grind Schumer endures on a daily basis in her career as a public figure. While speaking to the camera, Schumer spots a male subway rider taking her picture. When she asks to see his phone, the rider admits that he sent the picture to his brother, who is not a fan of the comedian. “Well, now you know,” says Schumer after raising her eyebrow while reading what viewers can only assume is a nasty exchange about the comedian.Schumer’s delicate balance of allowing fans into her personal life through her work is explored in the new docuseries, which includes showing intimate moments of her pregnancy, including Schumer’s reaction after finding out she was pregnant.
Schumer and Fischer have found a new audience together in their recently renewed cooking show Amy Schumer Learns To Cook, which the couple filmed in quarantine along with their one-year-old son and nanny. Fischer, who is a professional chef, does the heavy lifting with the cooking while Schumer uses her past career as a bartender to provide drink recipes and ongoing hilarious commentary. It’s another example of Schumer’s seemingly effortless ability to make the personal moments hilarious and relatable, whether she’s in her own kitchen or throwing up backstage before playing to a sold-out theatre.Expecting Amy debuts on Thursday, July 9 on Crave.[video_embed id='6016600312001']RELATED: Amy Schumer shares more about her husband’s autism[/video_embed]
