Adam Sandler did not win an Oscar on Sunday night. In fact, he wasn’t even nominated. Making just about every list for biggest Oscar snubs in 2020, Sandler’s role in Uncut Gems as a gambling addicted jewelry dealer in New York City was ignored by the Academy Awards, even though the actor received a nomination from the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and won Best Actor at the National Board of Review. Sandler took home another trophy on Saturday night when he won Best Actor at the Independent Spirit Awards, calling out his Oscars snub in what is being lauded as the best speech of award season. Don’t mess with Sand Man.Sandler opened the speech by thanking his family, saying he wanted to make sure he mentioned his wife and kids first in case he was cut off at the end. Sandler did return to the topic of family later in his speech, joking that his preteen daughters helped convince him to take the R-rated film. “And I truly want to thank my kids for reading Uncut Gems and saying, “Dad, you’ve gotta f**king do this movie. Fantastic stuff.”The SNL star spent most of the speech in his trademark Sandler voice (you know the one), first shouting out Aubrey Plaza, who hosted this year’s Independent Spirit Awards. Sandler reminded the crowd that he and Plaza starred in Judd Apatow’s film Funny People 11 years ago. “That was the last time critics pretended to not hate me for five f**king minutes,” said Sandler. The comedian then went on to acknowledge his fellow nominees, including Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse), Chris Galust (Give Me Liberty), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Luce), and Matthias Schoenaerts (The Mustang). Or, as they’ll now be known, “…the guys who lost to f**king Adam Sandler.”[video_embed id='5385098523001']RELATED:Adam Sandler Sports Carefree 'Shirt in the Ocean' Look[/video_embed]Sandler thanked the writing and directing team of the Safdie brothers for casting him in their film and got a big laugh out of the duo when he referred to their style as ‘homeless rabbis.’ Sandler also revisited some of his earlier work, eloquently describing Billy Madison as “a fearless look into the American education system through the eyes of a privileged sociopath.” The man did draw a blue duck. He had never seen a blue duck before. But the highlight of Sandler’s incredible speech came when he took on the Academy Awards, most notably his exclusion from this year’s show. “A few weeks back, when I was quote-unquote snubbed by the Academy, it reminded of when I briefly attended high school and was overlooked for the coveted yearbook superlative category Best Looking,” said Sandler. “That accolade was given to a jean-jacket-wearing featherhead douchebag by the name of Skipper Jenkins. But my classmates did honor me with the allegedly less-prestigious designation of Best Personality.”The comedian went on to say that he realized the Independent Spirit Awards were the Hollywood equivalent of the Best Personality award. “So, let all those featherhead douchebag mother**kers get their Oscars tomorrow night! Their handsome good looks will fade in time, while our independent personalities will shine on forever!”Time for the intense whiplash of Sandler going from arguably the best role of his career so far to the worst film he’s ever made.
