A timeline of Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid’s relationship

Somebody call up Hallmark because Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik are officially a sappy love story with a happy ending! After years of rom-com certified will-they-won't-they, they DID and now they have a little baby girl who is undoubtedly the most beautiful child on the planet (we're calling it now).The once on-again, off-again couple are decidedly back together but at just the beginning of 2020, the status of Zigi's relationship was unclear at best. The superstar couple had called it quits several times before but always seemed to find their back to one another, giving fans hope that their love would survive.Here’s a look at the timeline of Zayn and Gigi’s relationship, from the first rumours of a relationship to the introduction of a tiny girl human to solidify their love forever.

November 2015:

Gigi and Zayn are photographed holding hands while leaving an American Music Awards after-party together, immediately sparking dating rumours. Gigi was newly single after a recent breakup with Joe Jonas and Zayn had just been through two big splits: first, leaving One Direction and then ending his engagement to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards.

January 2016:

As rumours of a relationship continue to fly, Gigi is spotted wearing a “Z” necklace out in public as Zayn coyly insists the two are just friends. Later that month, a sultry Gigi starred in the music video for Zayn’s debut solo single "Pillowtalk" which didn’t exactly stop people from talking about their chemistry. Plus, Zayn called Gigi “babe” in a flirty tweet about the video, which basically made them official.

April 2016:

Now really, truly, officially an item, Gigi and Zayn shoot a gorgeous fashion spread for Vogue in Naples, Italy. Honestly, this photoshoot is more romantic than most people’s honeymoons and fans were swooning hard.

May 2016:

The couple look stunning at their first Met Gala appearance as a couple. Android chic? Yes please.

June 2016:

Breakup rumours swirl during the summer but the couple firmly deny it and continue to be photographed together.

September 2016:

Zayn and Gigi only had eyes for each other at Fashion Week in London, England.

March 2017:

In a video for Versace, Zayn tells Gigi she’s the person he most wants to be next to. “And our dogs,” Gigi replies, before adding their moms to the list. “Yes,” Zayn agrees. “I love you all.”

August 2017:

Gigi’s mom, model and reality show personality Yolanda Hadid, posts a sweet black and white image of the couple embracing while on vacation with the family. It looks like mom definitely approves.

September 2017:

Some people wear their heart on their sleeves, but Gigi wore hers on her back pocket with these custom jeans. As if we'd expect anything less from fashion's golden girl.

January 2018:

They’re still on! Gigi celebrates Zayn’s birthday with several loving messages on social media, wriing, “Love this man more than I could ever put into words,” and “I’m proud to be by your side.” Awww!

March 2018:

It’s over—for now. After breakup buzz hits the media, Zayn and Gigi both confirm the split. “Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship,” Malik wrote, asking fans to respect their privacy. April 2018:

Zayn and Gigi are spotted kissing in New York City, fueling reconciliation rumours. Just a few weeks later, Zayn is missing from Gigi’s 23rd birthday party, and it seems that the breakup is for real.

October 2018:

Aaaaand they’re back. Gigi calls Zayn her “happy place” as the couple resume posting cute Instagram Stories of each other. It seems these two can't stay away.

January 2019:

...or maybe they can, because they broke up again a few months later. Come on, guys, we were all rooting for you!

Fall 2019:

Zayn and Gigi are photographed together several times, sparking rumours that they’re back on. While neither one confirms anything at this point, they’re seen being affectionate in public on several occasions.

January 2020:

The couple are spotted walking arm in arm in New York City after dinner out with pal Dua Lipa and other friends. They may not be talking about their relationship much these days, but they aren’t hiding it either.

February 2020:

Gigi makes things Instagram official yet again, posting a sweet, casual photo of Zayn taken on her family’s vacation property back in December 2019 with the simple caption, "Hey Valentine."

On April 23rd (her 25th birthday), Gigi posts a series of celebratory photos from the family farm where she’s quarantined with sister Bella Hadid, mom Yolanda and others, including boyfriend Zayn. Plus, that bagel cake, which we now know is a result of specific cravings.

April 2020:

Baby on the way! After reports circulated that Gigi was secretly several months pregnant, the supermodel went on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to confirm the news. While viewers didn’t get to see a baby bump, Gigi was definitely glowing. “We’re very excited and happy,” she shared. Congratulations, lovebirds! Can’t wait to meet your little one in the fall.

May 2020:

Engaged? Zayn’s new ink recently sent fans into a frenzy and wild speculation that the couple are betrothed (or even secretly married). The tattoo, which could be partially seen in an image posted by Zayn’s jeweler, contains several lines from “On Love and Marriage” by Kahlil Gibran. The poem reads in part, “Love one another, but make not a bond of love. Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls." Engaged, married or not, that’s pretty darn romantic and based on their track record, we assume they'll let the world know when they're ready.

It's a girl! On September 23, Gigi and Zayn confirmed that G had given birth to a little girl with photos of themselves holding the babe's tiny hand. Zayn wrote on social media "Our baby girl is here, healthy & beautiful to try put into words how i am feeling right now would be an impossible task. The love i feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding. Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine, & thankful for the life we will have together."
