Retired basketball star Dwayne Wade is opening up about how he and wife, actress Gabrielle Union, live their life as a married couple. Namely, he reveals in a new interview the details of their pre-nuptial agreement and how they split their finances.

“I told her the same way, ‘I’ll sign a prenup too. You’re a millionaire, you got money. You work hard for yourself,' " he said during a recent appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast.

He continued to explain how, even married, they share things 50-50. “We decided that certain pieces of our life, we would share in it,”  he explained.

He added, “I have 20 to 50 responsibilities and my wife has 20 to 50 responsibilities and when I say that, that means she has her mother, she has her sisters, she has her dad so she has a lot of things she’s responsible for. She pays 100% of that and you know what I do? I pay 100% of my life.”

To prenup or not to prenup, that is the question. On the one hand, it's a romance killer; on the other, it's a savvy safety measure if your marriage goes down the drain and you have millions to lose. Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union aren’t the only married couple to be a big fan of 50-50 and pre-nuptial agreements.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

When the most famous singer in the world and the “99 Problems” rapper got married in 2008, they quickly established a set a ground rules with their prenup. Their document states that if they were to divorce, Beyoncé would get $5 million per child they had together, according to The Blast. In case you need a reminder, they have three children: Blue Ivy, and twins Sir and Rumi.

Beyoncé would also receive $1 million for each year they were married. This stipulation, however, was capped at 15 years, meaning it ends now in 2023. But Beyoncé and Jay-Z were already on top of it, as they revised the document in 2016, according to RadarOnline. "They have a pre-nuptial agreement already in place, but so much has happened in terms of their empire that it's needed updating for some time," a source told the outlet.

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas

The two actors have been married for nearly 23 years, but Catherine made sure that she got everything she wanted in the negotiations for their pre-nup.

"I think prenups are brilliant. If I were marrying someone of lesser fortune who was 25 years younger, I'd be doing exactly the same thing. Why should Michael be in a position where half of his fortune, which he's worked bloody hard for, should land in someone else's lap?" she said in an interview with Vanity Fair (via the New York Post). "I'm very lucky. I have my own money. I'm self-sufficient, and I think it's good for our relationship. I've never had a cent from any guy, and I'm very proud of that."

The “Romancing The Stone” icon and the “Chicago” Oscar winner made sure to hammer out an agreement prior to their wedding. According to The Guardian, the process wasn't entirely smooth. It was reported that the “Entrapment” star wanted over £3 million for each year they were married plus a home of her own. Douglas reportedly pushed back but in the end, they came to an agreement that had Zeta-Jones well protected if they should ever divorce.

Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich

Back in May 2020, “Dancing With The Stars” alum Julianne Hough and Canadian athlete Brooks Laich shocked us when they announced their divorce after nearly three years of marriage. But luckily, they had signed a pre-nup just days before their wedding.

According to People, it  was signed 11 days before tying the knot in July 2017. Due to the aforementioned document in place, the division of assets was relatively easy, with Hough and Laich keeping the respective properties and the former denying spousal support. Nearly two years after their announcement, Hough and Laich finalized their divorce proceedings in 2022. "The parties have entered into a written agreement regarding their property and their marriage or domestic partnership rights, including support, the original of which is being or has been submitted to the court," their court documents revealed.

Robert DeNiro and Grace Hightower

When Robert De Niro wed Grace Hightower, he ensured an ironclad prenup was in place first — well, sort of. Wealth Advisor claims the couple had already married, split, and reunited before signing a prenup. As part of the deal, De Niro reportedly agreed to buy Hightower out of their shared home, buy her a six million dollar pad in Manhattan and give her a princely sum annually. It was also allegedly agreed that she would get half of everything De Niro earned while they were together.

Page Six reports that the prenup they negotiated definitely didn't work in De Niro's favor. In 2021, the actor attempted to renegotiate the contract. In one clause, he agreed to pay Hightower $1 million yearly until death do they part — or until one of them remarries. De Niro's attorney argued that the annual prenup payment was conditional on her client making $15 million yearly. She claimed COVID-19 had severely impacted his finances and that De Niro would "be lucky if he makes $7.5 million this year."

There’s a lesson here: always read the fine print.
