Over the past month, Ricky Martin -- Latin pop star and the man who coined ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ -- has been embroiled in a shocking legal situation that keeps getting darker and darker.

It all began when the “She Bangs” crooner had a complaint lodged against him by his own nephew (son of his brother Eric) under the Domestic Abuse Prevention and Intervention Act in Puerto Rico. On July 2, Police attempted to issue the restraining order but were unable to do so. And rumours began to fly.

Reports emerged that Ricky had allegedly been carrying on an affair with his nephew, who is 21 years old. Incest, which falls under the domestic violence umbrella, carries with it under Puerto Rican law a maximum of 50 years behind bars.

On July 15, Ricky’s attorney Marty Singer swiftly released a statement to People to quell the media buzz.

“Unfortunately, the person who made this claim is struggling with deep mental health challenges. Ricky Martin has, of course, never been — and would never be — involved in any kind of sexual or romantic relationship with his nephew," Singer stated.

"The idea is not only untrue, it is disgusting. We all hope that this man gets the help he so urgently needs. But, most of all, we look forward to this awful case being dismissed as soon as a judge gets to look at the facts."

Ricky himself ended up speaking to the media, saying on Twitter, “The protection order entered against me is based on completely false allegations, so I will respond through the judicial process with the facts and dignity that characterize me.”

“Because it is an ongoing legal matter, I cannot make detailed statements at this time. I am grateful for the countless messages of solidarity, and I receive them with all my heart.”

Originally, it was reported by the New York Post that Ricky would testify Thursday, July 21 via Zoom, but then early on that day, news broke that Ricky’s nephew had withdrawn their complaint.

In another statement posted to Twitter, Ricky said the following:

"Just as we had anticipated, the temporary protection order was not extended by the Court. The accuser confirmed to the court that his decision to dismiss the matter was his alone, without any outside influence or pressure, and the accuser confirmed he was satisfied with his legal representation in the matter," his tweet read. "The request came from the accuser asking to dismiss the case."

He continued, "This was never anything more than a troubled individual making false allegations with absolutely nothing to substantiate them. We are glad that our client saw justice done and can now move forward with his life and his career."

This has been an explosive month for the Latin Grammy winner who has been married to partner Jwan Yosef since 2017. Twitter has lost its mind over the scandal, with some warning not to actually read any press about the matter, as it will just get darker and darker the more you read
