This is why TikTok thought Selena Gomez was shading Hailey Bieber.

If there’s one thing the patriarchy loves, it’s pitting women against each other. Especially women who have dated the same guy. They did it with Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, and the latest one to set social media aflame is a perceived rivalry between singer/actress Selena Gomez and model Hailey Bieber.

On May 10, Selena Gomez posted a TikTok where she seems to roll her eyes as she layers beauty products on her face. Maybe it was an attempt to satirize this popular TikTok trend, or maybe she was being genuine. Selena never says a word in the short video clip so it’s hard to tell.

But some viewers noticed the video was posted a few hours after Hailey Bieber, who is married to Selena’s ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, posted one of her "Get Ready With Me" videos, where she lets viewers get an inside look at her beauty regimen.

In comments screencapped by fans and shared on Twitter, many immediately jumped to conclusions that the Only Murders In The Building star was shading Mrs. Bieber.

"LOL I know who she's referring to," one user wrote with another posting, "Wait ... is she tryna make fun of you know who."

The Selena + Chef host quickly turned off comments on the TikTok, responding in a comment of her own, "This is why I believe in taking care of your mental health. Guys no idea what I did but I really am sorry. Zero bad intention. Deleting soon."

The "Wolves" singer has been very open about how the online vitriol on social media took a toll on her mental health in the past and she even stayed offline for four years. During that time, she handed over control of her accounts, including her passwords, to her team.

This isn’t the first time fans of both The Biebs and Selena have started a flame war. In 2020, Elle reported that Jelena stans trolled Hailey's Instagram with snide posts about her husband, such as "He will leave you one day and he will go to selenaaaaaaaaaa." While all of that was going down, Hailey was actually liking Selena’s photos on IG in a show of solidarity and kindness.

"Hailey thinks Selena is talented,” an insider close to the Biebers told US Weekly in 2019. “By liking photos of Selena, whether it be a glam shot or ones that her friends post on Instagram, Hailey wants to show that there are no hard feelings. It's her way of trying to make peace and show her support for Selena in a low-key way, yet public way.

The Jelena hate in Hailey's comments is still so constant, she posted a video a couple weeks ago begging commenters to leave her alone. She doesn't mention Jelena shippers in the video, but fans have speculated those are the comments she's alluding to when she says, "Enough time has gone by. I’m minding my business. I don’t do anything, I don’t say anything. Leave me alone, please.”

Jelena stans appear to be hung up on the “Love You Like A Love Song” singer’s relationship with Canadian popstar Justin Bieber. The pair started dating in 2011, but after a bit of on-again-off-again, they broke up for good in 2018.

Selena has since been linked to another Canadian pop star, The Weeknd, and also had a brief fling with Mr. Priyanka Chopra (aka Nick Jonas), but Selena has been very vocal lately about her happiness and contentment with being single and independent. She is also incredibly busy this week, preparing for her first-ever hosting stint on Saturday Night Live

Obviously that hasn’t stopped fans of the Biebers and Selena from spinning a tale, but we gotta give major props to this Twitter user, who called for some sense amongst the madness. "STOP ASSOCIATING SELENA GOMEZ WITH HAILEY AND JUSTIN AND VICE VERSA."
