'West Side Story' and 'Power of the Dog' lead an inert, online-only Golden Globes

With the winners announced on Twitter, the usually-glitzy event was all but ignored by much of Hollywood.

What a strange time to be alive. Awards season is on-ish, but because of the Omicron variant and backlash about the HFPA's lack of diversity, the Golden Globes, a.k.a. the show that usually kicks off the glitzy, trophy-fuelled chain of events, looked very different this year.

Only members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and some recipients of recent charitable grants were in attendance at the show's traditional Beverly Hills stomping ground, after NBC pulled the plug on an actual broadcast following an LA Times exposé that revealed the HFPA’s "culture of corruption" and penchant for accepting freebies in exchange for votes.

So no celebrities, no TV cameras and no live-streaming. In fact, the only evidence anything was going down at all was the Globes' official Twitter account and website providing winner updates.

So how did that work out? Well, much like when the nominees were announced on December 13, things got awkward. In fact many who were following along couldn't help but poke fun at the utter lack of spectacle.

One of the problems of sharing the names of winners via social media is that not everyone has social media. Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook, who each won acting kudos for Succession, as well as Squid Game's O Yeong-su, best screenplay winner Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), and Mare of Easttown star Kate Winslet aren't on Twitter, so they weren’t tagged. Jason Sudeikis, who won for Ted Lasso, technially does have a Twitter account but he has zero tweets to-date. So, you can see the issue.

Will Smith, Andrew Garfield, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Nicole Kidman and Jean Smart were all also silent following their wins, setting a pretty undeniable trend for the evening, though a history-making Michaela Jaé Rodriguez did take to her Instagram to celebrate her big win.

Hours after her win was announced on Twitter, Ariana DeBose acknowledged that though "there is still work to be done", her Globe for Best Supporting Actress in West Side Story was "special."

Not even the winning networks and streaming services participated by retweeting or celebrating their big “wins,” opting to all but ignore the ceremony in its entirety.

It’s not surprising, given that many publicists refused to include HFPA members in their award consideration campaigns this year, with many of them reportedly even skipping sending screeners to the members. That didn’t mean there was no online chatter about the Globes on Sunday night though. Twitter was lit up with people who wondered why the announcements were so unevenly paced, and who was actually behind the tweets given some of the questionable copy.

At least a few celebs did give the Globes a bit of TLC, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger appearing in pre-recorded videos highlighting the HFPA's year-round philanthropic efforts, which felt more like a corrective PSA than anything else.

West Side Story star Rachel Zegler was amongst the few celebs who commented on the Globes (she won for Best Actress, Musical/Comedy), but in the most “tell us you won a Globe without telling us you won a Globe way”—with a picture of *Oscar* Isaac—before tweeting about her casting and eventual win, saying "life is very strange."
