Comedian and writer John Mulaney has had a helluva year, and it’s not finished yet. Last night during his appearance on best friend Seth Meyer’s Late Night (weeknights at 12:35aET on CTV), the funny man revealed that he and girlfriend Olivia Munn are expecting their first child.

“We’re having a baby together. I was nervous when I was about to say the news,” he said, mocking his delivery of the happy announcement. “I’m gonna be a dad!”

The announcement came with a big explanation of the past 12 months for the former SNL writer and Kid Gorgeous comedian.

“I packed a lot into this (year) ... is it September now?” he joked. “Since last September, I went to rehab in September. Okay. I got out in October, I move out of my home from my ex-wife (Anna Marie Tendler). I host Saturday Night Live on Halloween. I relapse on drugs.”

“I continued using drugs,” he continued. “You and some other friends staged an intervention, as you recall. I went to rehab again, this time for two months. I got out in February. I lived in sober living for another month and a half.”

“Then in the spring I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia,” he continued, noting that he actually first met Munn at Seth Meyers’ wedding, later cracking a joke that at least something good came out of that wedding. Ugh, John? Seth is still married and he’s sitting *right there.*

Speaking about his recovery and stints in rehab, John characterized his sobriety with a Disney analogy, saying, “It's like newborn Bambi legs. You know how when Bambi's born, Bambi's like, ‘Hey, I used to be on cocaine!'" he joked.

Then he made sure to add that being with Olivia has helped those Bambi-legs find their footing.

“I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible who has dealt with the non-coked up Bambi version of me,” John continued. “And that's been very incredible, and she's kind of held my hand through that hell, and we’re having a baby together.”

“We’re both really, really happy,” he smiled, later adding, “Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery."

That journey of recovery was rocky for a while there. John alluded early on in the interview to an intervention staged by his close friends, and later, he revealed fully what happened when he walked into the room that included Meyers, Bill Hader, Nick Kroll, Fred Armisen, and others.

“When I opened the door, I knew right away it was an intervention,” he said. “That’s how bad of a drug problem I had, that when I opened the door and saw people I went, ‘This is probably an intervention.’ You know the gambit: that I was going to dinner with a friend from college at their apartment, and you were the first person I saw as I walked through the doorway where I knew this was an intervention. So, ‘I’m going to dinner with a friend from college, going to dinner with a friend from college, going to dinner with a friend from college, what’s Seth Meyers doing here? F**k! F**k!'”

“I needed to be the smartest person in the room even at the intervention,” he later quipped. “So I remember saying to all of you, ‘Before you all read your letter, I have a drug problem and I need help.’ Just to scoop you.”

Despite the jokes, Mulaney made sure to express how that intervention is the reason why he’s still alive today. “Sitting here tonight, I’m so grateful to you and to everyone there for saving my life.”

This is the first child for both Munn and Mulaney, who have been dating since the spring. Mulaney was previously married to Anna Marie Tendler for six years, announcing their divorce last summer. Tendler said in a statement after their split, “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery."
