It’s 2021 and the Met Gala is a go this year (even if it’s been delayed by four months). The annual themed fashion event to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will this year celebrate “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” with a party (and red carpet) that will include fashion and entertainment industry icons like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Naomi Campbell, Nicki Minaj, and… a lot of social media influencers. And wait until you see who’s rumoured to be sitting with who…

A leaked hypothetical seating plan is currently making the rounds on Twitter and the arrangements have some of the platform’s users SHOOK.

Granted, the seating arrangement has more than what one might deem, ahem, errors in terms of placing heavy hitters next to minor league rookies. As some keen-eyed Twitter users have pointed out, there are spelling and grammatical mistakes in the plan, which definitely detracts from its credibility. Still, what IF?

What if musical genius The Weeknd is actually wedged between YouTube makeup artist James Charles (who’s had some serious grooming allegations levelled at him this year) and TikTok influencer Charli D’Amelio? There’s more than one fan who has some strong feelings on the subject.

And while some of us play the “would you rather” game, choosing the table we’d most like to sit at, others have more extreme opinions based on this leaked plan.

Is it because Beyoncé is seated next to 2018 Streamy Award winner Emma Chamberlain? We’ll probably never know. But just in case, Beyoncé should prepare herself for some really fast-talking. Also, why is Lizzo not beside Rihanna? Is there someone at the Gala trying to stand between us and a potential heavenly duet from two of our faves? Perhaps the pair will get time to chat on that legendary red carpet. Sigh.

Speaking of the red carpet entrance, we should get to see Jennifer Lopez (sans Ben), Kim Kardashian, and the aforementioned Beyoncé walk the museum’s famous staircase. However, regulars at the event like Sarah Jessica Parker, seated between Lorde and Lizzo in the leaked plan, may be unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts. (Hi, we’ll happily take her spot.)

"We really try to think very carefully about who's sitting next to each other," said Vogue's director of special events Eaddy Kiernan. "Our ideal pairing would maybe be two people who we think will just get on like a house on fire, but who may not even realize that they have a lot in common. So with each person, we really do take time to think, 'What will they talk about?'"

This year’s gala will happen in tandem with New York Fashion Week, making it a true celebration of American designers. The A-lister co-chairs are Naomi Osaka, Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish, and Timothee Chalamet. As for an explanation behind the strong social media contingent? The 2021 Met Gala is sponsored by Instagram.
