Olympic champion, reality TV star, and California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner is front and centre for the new Netflix documentary Untold, which gets to the heart of some of the biggest controversies, scandals, and cover-ups in sports.

Jenner, who famously won gold in the men’s decathlon at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, talks about her identity struggles as she competed in Montreal, and how she tried to hide who she really was.

"I spent my entire life hiding," Jenner says in the new trailer that just dropped on Tuesday. "I didn't want people to know me, and know who I was."

In April of 2015, after months of speculation, Caitlyn confirmed she was transgender and told the world to “call me Caitlyn” on the July 2015 cover of Vanity Fair. She has since also starred in a reality TV show surrounding her new life after coming out called I Am Cait.

"I was an Olympic Champion, the greatest athlete in the world," she adds. "But I was still the same old person with all the same old issues."

The documentary comes a few months after the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star, who is currently seeking to replace California governor Gavin Newsom in a recall election, told TMZ that she does not support trans girls joining girls' sports leagues and teams.

“I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls' sports in school,” she said. “It just isn't fair. And we have to protect girls' sports in our schools."

She then doubled down on that statement on Twitter, writing, “I didn't expect to get asked this on my Saturday morning coffee run, but I'm clear about where I stand. It's an issue of fairness and we need to protect girls' sports in our schools."

The documentary, which drops on the streaming platform on August 10th, is already exciting sports fans, but some have taken to the comments section to voice their displeasure at Jenner’s inclusion.

“Looks awesome. The Caitlyn Jenner story seems out of place though,” one commenter posted underneath the trailer on Youtube. “She’s a monster and doesn’t deserve any spotlight. There are plenty of trans people with stories worth telling. Hers is not one of them.”

Jenner will be joined in the docu-series by other famous (or infamous) athletes in the sports world like boxer Christy Martin, tennis player Mardy Fish, basketball star Metta Sandiford-Artest and the United Hockey League team Danbury Trashers.

The executive producers of the docu-series, brothers Chapman and Maclain Way, said in a press release about Untold, “If audiences walk away from UNTOLD with an understanding of the complexities and struggles that these humans are going through and how sports has an impact on the larger culture beyond who ‘wins’ or ‘loses,’ that will be our victory.”
