Demi Lovato has come out as non-binary. The actor and performer made the announcement in a heartfelt post to fans on May 19, revealing they are changing their pronouns to they/them.

“I want to take this moment to share something very personal with you,” the 28-year-old said in a minute-and-a-half-long Instagram video. “Over the past year and a half, I've been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I've had this revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I'll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them.”

Lovato, who has spent a large chunk of their life in the public eye as a child actor and now performer continued: “I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and am still discovering.”

This isn’t the first time Lovato has opened up with fans in recent months. They recently starred in the explosive four-part YouTube documentary, Dancing With the Devil, which covered their near-death experience following a 2018 overdose. Meanwhile in March, they opened up about being pansexual on an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience.

“Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me,” Lovato captioned their Insta video. “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way.”

Lovato shared the video in conjunction with the launch of their new podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato. “Living in the fourth dimension means existing consciously in both time and space, but for me it means having conversations that transcend the traditional discourse,” they explained at the top of the video.

The podcast’s first episode also includes a chat with author/performer Alok Vaid-Menon, and promises to be the first of many such conversations as new episodes unroll. Lovato introduced Vaid-Menon as an, “Important voice within the non-binary community and beyond,” and revealed they have been an inspiration to Lovato in their own journey to self-identity and healing.

“Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity and chance to be who we want and wish to be,” Lovato also wrote in the caption. “I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, and everything in between. Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras. Today is a day I'm so happy to share more of my life with you all.”
