Britney Spears moves to make Jodi Montgomery her permanent conservator

Britney Spears is once again making moves to remove her father Jamie Spears from his role as her conservator, a title the elder spears has held for 13 years. On Tuesday, the pop star’s legal team filed paperwork requesting a judge to permanently remove the elder spears from Britney’s conservator team and make Jodi Montgomery her permanent conservator.

Britney’s lawyer Sam Ingham made the request to terminate Jamie Spears’ role in his daughter's legal affairs. “Petitioner has requested the resignation of the current conservator of her person, James P. Spears, who temporarily relinquished his powers effective as of September 9, 2019,” the filing reads according to a copy obtained by Variety. “The within petition requests his replacement by Jodi Pais Montgomery, who has acted as temporary conservator of her person since that date.”

Ingham’s petition reportedly also notes that Britney “expressly reserves the right to petition for termination of this conservatorship.”

Jamie Spears has been his daughter’s conservator since 2008 following a public mental health crisis suffered by the singer. In 2019, Jamie Spears stepped down as conservator of Britney’s person because of his health and became co-conservator of her estate along with Bessemer Trust Company. Following the elder Spears’ change in conservator status, Jodi Montgomery became Britney’s conservator of person, something the singer wants to make permanent and include her estate.

A 2014 order cited in Ingham’s petition points out that Britney was then deemed unable to make her own medical decisions. A permanent change in Montgomery’s role would allow her to continue having control over Britney’s medical records, restricting who is allowed to access the singer and making decisions with regards to Britney’s security team. A hearing to determine whether a judge will allow Montgomery to become Britney’s only conservator is set to take place on April 27.

For her part, Spears seems aware of the controversy surrounding her and renewed interest in her case following the release of Framing Britney Spears (watch now on Crave). On March 12, she posted a video on Instagram to answer the question she says fans have been repeatedly sending her. Instead of addressing the conservatorship in any way, Spears replied to innocuous questions, including naming her dream car, confirming that she has fallen on stage and kissed a girl (Madonna). It’s difficult to tell whether Spears is baiting her father or, as many #FreeBritney supports stated in the documentary, sending another veiled and coded message to her supporters.

Earlier this week, Spears also shared a video of herself performing when she was a teen. The singer wrote that the video was sent to her by her mother Lynn Spears, adding “My mom sent this to me and reminded me that I can sing!!!! She said, “You never sing anymore … you need to again !!!!” I’ve actually never watched this performance.” Spears has reportedly told her legal team that she refuses to perform again until her father has been removed as her conservator.

Spears also raised concern among her supporters following several posts centered on the color red. In one, Spears shared a picture of glossy red lips and nails, captioning the pic ‘RED.’ In a second post, Spears uploaded an image of a red fridge. Spears has also shared a red-free gallery of herself with the caption “Twisted Elegance … introducing RED.” As noted by many fans, “Twisted Elegance” is the name of the lead track on Janet Jackson’s 1997 album Velvet Rope. The women were recently mentioned together following the Framing Britney Spears documentary, which put the years of publicly supported toxic and misogynistic behaviour of Justin Timberlake on blast and prompted the singer to publicly apologize to both women.

As for the red connection? It’s difficult to tell whether Spears is sending ‘red’ flags or simply going with a theme.
