Bindi Irwin gives birth to a baby girl with husband Chandler Powell

Congratulations are in order for Bindi Irwin and her husband, Chandler Powell. The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Grace Warrior Irwin Powell, on Thursday.

In her Instagram announcement, the 22-year-old shared the meaning behind her daughter's name and how it honours her late father, Steve Irwin, also known as The Crocodile Hunter. As many will recall, Bindi’s father was killed during a diving expedition in 2006 while shooting an underwater documentary film in Australia. The whole Irwin family has worked to carry on his legacy and it seems that now includes little Grace.

Bindi and Chandler had a lot to celebrate because Grace was brought into this world on the same day that marked their first wedding anniversary.

“Celebrating the two loves of my life,” Bindi wrote in the photo caption. “Happy first wedding anniversary to my sweetheart husband and day of birth to our beautiful daughter. Grace Warrior Irwin Powell. Our graceful warrior is the most beautiful light.”

“Grace is named after my great-grandmother, and relatives in Chandler’s family dating back to the 1700s. Her middle names, Warrior Irwin, are a tribute to my dad and his legacy as the most incredible Wildlife Warrior,” she continued.

“Her last name is Powell and she already has such a kind soul just like her dad. There are no words to describe the infinite amount of love in our hearts for our sweet baby girl. She chose the perfect day to be born and we feel tremendously blessed.”

Chandler shared the same photo to his own Instagram account and wrote: "Grace Warrior Irwin Powell. After waiting for you to arrive for the last 9 months, finally meeting you has been the best moment of my life. You have a big life ahead of you and no matter what, you will be surrounded by a whole lot of love. Thank you for gracing your beautiful mother and me on our wedding anniversary, so excited to have you home.”

Bindi's mother, Terri Irwin, congratulated her daughter and son-in-law on welcoming their first child. "Love is not a big enough word," Terri wrote on Twitter. "My heart is so incredibly happy. And I know that Steve would be beyond proud."

The pair announced they were expecting a "Baby Wildlife Warrior" last August. “Baby Wildlife Warrior due 2021,” Bindi's Instagram caption read. “Chandler and I are proud to announce that we’re expecting! It’s an honour to share this special moment in our lives with you.”

Bindi first met Chandler in November 2013 when he was in Australia for a professional wakeboarding competition and decided to stop by the Australia Zoo, the same place the couple got engaged and married.

They got married last March at the zoo just hours before a curfew due to coronavirus set by the Australian government would have restricted the wedding to five people. 

“March 25th 2020,” Bindi wrote on Instagram alongside a photo from the wedding. “We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now.”

“We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding,” Irwin revealed.

“This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos,” she continued. “Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history.”

Bindi said that her mother helped her get ready and her brother Robert walked her down the aisle. The couple lit a candle in honour of her dad's memory. 

Bindi previously told People that she couldn't be happier to have found a partner who shares so many of her father's qualities. “He loves wildlife and conservation and he has this strength. Which is necessary when you’re jumping on crocs.”
