The Golden Globes have traditionally marked the official start of awards season, but even the magic of Hollywood has not been immune to in-person restrictions in this age of the pandemic. While there might not be a red carpet this year, we can still console ourselves with this glamorous stroll (okay, scroll) down memory lane of Golden Globes past.

We’ve nominated 25 winning looks over the Globes’ past 77 years as the most memorable. True to the character of every awards show, some sartorial wins you might expect...while others might surprise you.

Elizabeth Taylor, 1957

Dame Elizabeth Taylor was born for royalty—Hollywood style. Here she is with her third husband, film producer Mike Todd, in a beautiful, floral brocade gown topped with what else but a tiara. See the white gloves on the table? Most befitting for a royal, indeed.

Marilyn Monroe, 1962

We’re floored with style icon Marilyn Monroe’s floor-length sequined gown that was actually a hunter-green in colour at the 19th Golden Globe Awards. Monroe won The Henrietta Award for World Film Favorite Female presented by another icon himself: Rock Hudson. She must have owned the dance floor at the after-party.

Sandra Dee, 1966

Actress Sandra Dee’s ornately embellished ensemble is resplendent of  '60s glitz and style. We bet the Golden Globe winner (Until They Sail, 1958) turned heads in this iconic bejeweled two-piece.

Ann-Margret, 1970

We wonder if five-time Golden Globe winner Ann-Margret ruffled some feathers in this silver-sequined zig-zag design at the 27th Golden Globes? She must have taken centre stage.

Donna Summer, 1979

We can just feel the disco vibes the singer-songwriter is giving us with this multi-coloured sparkle number at the 36th Golden Globes. Like her song, we feel love.

Elizabeth Taylor, 1985

We have to bring it back to Elizabeth Taylor one more time because here she is the epitome of '80s glamour at the 42nd Globes. The Cecil B. Demille Award for her contribution to American cinema is the perfect finishing touch. Are those sequins on her dress or White Diamonds?

Barbara Carrera, 1986

Barbara Carrera may have won a Golden Globe nom two years earlier for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture as the villainess Bond Girl in Never Say Never Again, but she looked positively angelic at the 43rd Globes. We would never say never to that dress.

Julia Roberts, 1990

Julia Roberts stole the show at the 47th Golden Globes when she won the Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Steel Magnolias. But we think the glee in the photo might be more from how comfortable she feels in this oversized Giorgio Armani men’s suit. Win, win.

Audrey Hepburn, 1990

Always of the ‘less is more” persuasion, Audrey Hepburn’s minimalistic approach to fashion fared very well for the My Fair Lady star at the 47th Golden Globes in this simple but stunning ivory gown. Hepburn was a winner in more ways than one: she took home the Cecil B. Demille Award that year. We wonder if the earrings were from Tiffany’s?

Diahann Carroll, 1993

As the first Black actress to win a Golden Globe in 1969, Diahann Carroll was no stranger to breaking barriers. She also had no problem killing it in suits, either. At the 50th Golden Globes, Carroll forwent the traditional dress in favour of this power pantsuit. The lace adds an original touch to a most original woman.

Joan Collins, 1995

During the '80s, Joan Collins was known for being the centre of attention—whether it was on Dynasty or on the red carpet. The primetime drama may have ended by the '90s but Collins’ off-screen presence continued to be just as showstopping. Here she is dressed to the nines in a lavender gown because she knows there is no show without her.

Alfre Woodard, 1998

We don’t know who those gentlemen in the background are looking at because the spotlight should be on Alfre Woodard in this sparkly black and gold spaghetti-strapped gown at the 55th Globes. All eyes were on Woodard when she won the award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture for TV for Miss Evers’ Boys that night.

Barbra Streisand, 2000

Barbra Streisand approached her Globes dress with a casual flair that only she can pull off. Here she is just as striking in silver at the 57th Globes as she is on the silver screen. She won the Cecil B. Demille Award that year to boot.

Sarah Jessica Parker, 2004

The Sex and the City star is stunning in this strapless Chanel couture sweetheart dress at the 61st Globes. It was a night full of sparkle in more ways than one: Jessica Parker won the Globe for Best Performance By An Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy. In the style of Carrie Bradshaw herself: “I love [this dress] so much my heart hurts."

Beyoncé, 2007

Singer Beyoncé Knowles is known for setting the gold standard when it comes to dressing for the red carpet. If this Elie Saab creation isn’t the golden ticket to the 64th Globes, we don’t know what is.

Helen Mirren, 2011

Always a Queen in our books, Helen Mirren is in all her (golden) glory in this subtly-ornate Badgley Mischka gown at the 68th Golden Globes. We hope she got the royal treatment.

Angelina Jolie, 2011

All of our fashion fantasies are fulfilled by seeing Angelina Jolie in this bateau-neck, full-sleeved and fully-sequined Atelier Versace gown at the 68th Globes. We wish we had been there in person to see the full effect.

Madonna, 2012

Madonna struck a pose at the 69th Globes for the first time in 14 years in this metallic number that gave some edge to the red carpet. The Material Girl’s material came from none other than New York fashion designer Reem Acra. The singer’s comeback was well worth the wait: she won her second Golden Globe that night for Best Original Song.

Lupita Nyong’o, 2015

Lupita Nyong’o is always a red carpet standout and the 2015 Globes were no exception. This extraordinary Giambattista Valli couture lilac gown featured floral appliqués on the bustier... and the matching purple eyeshadow? A masterclass in red carpet dressing.

Jane Fonda, 2015

Picking up our jaws from the floor, we see that Jane Fonda in red Versace proves once again that sex appeal does not have an age limit. We'd take work-out lessons from her, any time.

Evan Rachel Wood, 2017

Evan Rachel Wood channeled Hollywood fashion icon Marlene Dietrich at the 74th Golden Globes when she donned this Altuzarra Le Smoking-esque tuxedo. “I wanted young girls and women to know that [wearing a dress] is not a requirement,” she said at the time.

Olivia Culpo, 2017

What can be said about this Zuhair Murad dress except that it’s a work of art? We have to wonder if it was inspired by the artist of all artists, Vincent Van Gogh himself. What we can say without a doubt is that Olivia Culpo owns this piece of art.

Sandra Oh, 2019

It was another iconic moment for Canada when Sandra Oh took home the Globe for the second time at the 76th Awards. She's also the first Asian woman to have won multiple Golden Globes (Grey’s Anatomy, 2006; Killing Eve, 2019). Oh might be admiring her second Globe, but we’re admiring her bateau-necked, sequin-sleeved Stella McCartney gown that makes her look just as statuesque.

Regina King, 2019

Regina King won a Golden Globe at the 76th Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for If Beale Street Could Talk. Some have said that King’s metallic-pink sequin dress by Alberta Ferretti should have won its own Golden Globe. We’ll second that motion.

Jennifer Lopez, 2020

Back in early January 2020, Jennifer Lopez must have sensed somehow that the 77th Golden Globes red carpet would be the last one for some time, so she gave us a parting gift in the form of this custom Valentino dress—complete with a bow. We should be giving her a thank you speech.

The 78th annual Golden Globe Awards air Sunday, February 28 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.
