Katharine McPhee welcomes a baby boy with David Foster

It’s a baby boy for Broadway star Katharine McPhee and Canadian music guru David Foster. The pair announced that they welcomed a boy this week, two years after tying the knot. It’s the first child for McPhee, and the sixth for Foster. 

“Katharine McPhee and David Foster have welcomed a healthy baby boy. Mom, Dad and son are all doing wonderfully,” a rep confirmed to People on February 24. “Everything went well,” a source also told Us Weekly. “Mom and baby are healthy.”

Speculation that McPhee was pregnant first surfaced last fall after photos of the couple were taken while they were shopping for baby things in California. A day later, the Waitress star took to her Instagram Stories to slyly confirm the news. 

“I just came home and opened this gift from Aperol Spritz, which for those of you who don’t know … it’s one of my favourite drinks and reminds me of being in Capri,” she said at the time. “Thank you, Aperol Spritz. I won’t be drinking this anytime soon, wink, wink. But, I’m very excited! Who’s coming over for an Italian-inspired cocktail?” 

Recently, McPhee, who stars in next month’s Netflix release of Country Comfort opposite Eddie Cibrian, opened up about becoming a boy mom on an episode of the Women on Top Podcast.

“Now that I am having a boy, there are different things I need to worry about to teach him versus the things I would be thinking about with a girl,” she said. “But it's kind of refreshing because I feel like I don't need to think about those societal 'this is the way you look.' I think men have different issues and different things to worry about.”

McPhee and Foster first met in 2006 when McPhee was a contestant on season five of American Idol and Foster mentored her and other contestants. McPhee went on to take second place that season, ultimately losing to winner Taylor Hicks. (Kellie Pickler and Chris Daughtry were also featured on that season.)

At the time Foster, had just divorced his third wife, actress Linda Thompson, whom he was married to from 1991 to 2005. He went on to marry Yolanda Hadid in 2011 after five years of dating. However, the pair went through a public divorce beginning in 2015 that was highlighted on that season of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which Hadid then starred in.

Foster, 71, and McPhee, 36, were first romantically linked in 2017 when they were spotted having dinner together. They became engaged in 2018 and married in London in 2019. Previously, McPhee was married to David Cokas from 2008 to 2016, and Foster was also previously married to B.J. Cook and Rebecca Dyer. This is the first child for McPhee and the sixth biological child for Foster, but his first biological son.

The composer-producer has five daughters—Allison Jones (50), whom he gave up for adoption when he was 20 and reconnected with when she turned 30; Amy Skylark (47) with Cook; and Sara (39), Erin (40) and Jordan (34) with Dyer. He is also stepfather to Hadid’s three model children (Gigi, Bella and Anwar), and to Thompson’s children with Caitlyn Jenner, Brody and Brandon Jenner. (Fans may recall that blended family, which was featured in the short-lived reality show The Princes of Malibu.) Foster also has seven grandchildren.

In 2019, Foster opened up about his past marriages and stints with reality TV in the Crave documentary David Foster: Off the Record. 

“Probably more people know me from reality TV and from being married a lot of times than for my actual music. Well, let’s analyze,” Foster says in the doc. “Because I was married to Linda who was married to [Caitlyn] Jenner, who then married Kris Kardashian, and had the Jenner kids and the Kardashian kids and then I was married to Yolanda Hadid, who had Gigi and Bella, and I was married to Rebecca and B.J., where we had our own daughters, so it’s very, very complicated.”

Complicated or not, Foster and McPhee appear very much in love, with McPhee often posting about her love on social media and giving fans an inside look at their relationship.
